Welcome to Part 1 of my playthrough of Markus Ritter - Ghosts of the Past.
This FMV mystery game came across my desk, and I was intrigued. Honestly I'll play any FMV game, because there's something just so delightfully camp about them, even when they're not trying to be. That said, this game knows what it's about and it's camp in just the right way.
You play as Markus Ritter, a man who has found himself a Shadow Hunter. What is a Shadow Hunter? I'm not entirely sure, as either there is a game before this that explains it, or we're supposed to figure it out as we go. Regardless, he seems pretty new at this, and we're still getting our footing. It also seems to be a sort-of secret? Oh and also there's Ro, who is apparently our sister or.. half-sister? who we didn't know about. She is also a Shadow Hunter, apparently. In any case you are attempting to stop the murders of many women in Austria, and also be a successful not-author?
This game is weird, but I love it.
Also I want to give a couple positive notes:
1. The music in this game is shockingly good for an FMV adventure game
2. This game is queer as heck and I love it. You don't see a lot of representation in FMV games that isn't kitchy or gross, so I am stoked to see it here
3. the chemistry between Markus and Ludwig is electric. Legitimately feels like they're into each other. Fantastic acting
One hang up: This game states that it has english localization for audio and subtitles, but only the subtitles are consistent. Most of the videos remain in their native Austrian. It's not a deal-breaker for me, but something to know going in.
