Let's Play Pillars of Eternity [27] - Osric's Breastplate

Anyone who has experience playing Pillars of Eternity will tell you that the Dozens are all a bunch of jerks. Seriously, just take a look at Durance and tell me that guy isn't a 6th level jerkintosh by this point. I mean, he's a priest but if Pillars of Eternity supported multi-classing and jerkintosh was a class, then Durance would have a higher jerkintosh level than a priest level. Not sure what kind of gameplay effects a jerkintosh class would have, but I don't know, it's meant to be a joke. I guess the jerks could have a taunt ability to enrage their enemies and draw aggro or something.

Okay, I need to stop talking about hypothetical gameplay mechanics that don't even exists in Pillars of Eternity, and talk about stuff that actually exists, both in the game, and in this very video. So remember what I said about the Dozens being jerks? That's true. It's in the lore and back story of the game. However, I've also been told that the Dozens also have a really, really good shop. This means that despite my distaste for them, I must complete whatever quests they gave me and pretend like I care about the stories they tell about the Crucible Knights being even worse jerks. One such story was told to me last episode by a former Crucible Knight, current Dozens member by the name of Osric. He told us that after he got fired from the Crucible Knights for being a slovenly drunk, they forgot to toss his battered old breastplate out of Crucible Keep along with him. I'm pretty sure that's how the story goes, and this is not character assassination.

Long story short, he gave us a quest to go to Crucible Keep, find his breastplate and get it back from some Crucible Knight dude called Penhelm who apparently isn't allowed to be a Crucible Knight but he forged some documents. Man, this Penhelm guy sounds like a jerk!

Of course seeing as Pillars of Eternity is a crpg, going to Crucible Keep and doing the quest alone is not enough. CRPG gameplay is all about going through every single area with a finely toothed comb, discovering all sidequests, hidden loot, and pieces of writing that give insight into the setting, backstory, and narrative, and then finally leaving to go back to whatever the task at hand is only after you've already forgotten about it. Pillars of Eternity does its predecessors justice by encouraging this very sort of gameplay, and this very sort of gameplay is what is featured in today's episode of Let's Play Pillars of Eternity.

We also pick up a bunch of other quests as we go through Crucible Keep and talk to everyone. Apparently there's a wanted poster of some guy. Maybe we could turn him in for loot, or help him escape the law? The choice is ours because, well, besides combat and dialogue making decisions like this the main gameplay in Pillars of Eternity. Also behind character creation I guess. We also hear about scary undead shenanigans Heritage Hill, which is quest and get to talk to the Lord Commander (I don't know if this is his real title, but he's the leader) of the Crucible Knights here in Defiance Bay and I think we pick up a quest to go and find some animancer that the Crucible Knights want to use to fill up the ranks. Yeah. That sounds like it'll go real well after what happened at Heritage Hill.
