Let's Play Wolfenstein: The New Order [Part 19] - Mech Warrior
Remember how I said I really liked the gameplay in Wolfenstein: The New Order because it gave you a variety of fun stuff to do, but in a nicely integrated way? I still agree with that statement, and I'll tell you why. So far in Wolfesntein: The New Order, we've seen many giant nazi robots, and destroy quite a few of them as well. This should come as no surprise to anyone who has watched this Let's Play, or indeed, played any Wolfenstein game in the past. Shooting nazis is a core gameplay element, and often times these nazis are robots.
Well, in this segment of Wolfenstein: The New Order, we've just finished doing some stealth and disables the security systems in the nazi prison camp we're in at the behest of Set Roth aka that Jewish super engineer scientist guy from Da'at Yichud. He then tells us to go find a detronic battery that will allow him to override the controls on the giant nazi robot in the yard. So does that mean we'll get control of a giant nazi robot and then use it to shoot other nazis and their robots? Because this game is Wolfenstein: The New Order, the answer is yes of course this is a part of the gameplay, how are you even asking. Now that's the kind of integration between the story and setting and gameplay that I'm talking about.
Speaking of the storyline, because this game has one, a lot of important stuff happens in this episode. It's actually pretty interesting because there are a mixture of story telling tools and methods that are used to advance the narrative in a relatively short span of time in the game. This whole African prison camp level has some pretty interesting design decisions, I have to say. Oh, and since Frau Engel was here earlier, we do in fact run into her. And it's not just a cutscene (although there are a few cutscenes in this episode and she is in one). We also get back to base camp with Wyatt and Anya and the crew and there's a cutscene that expands further on the story, gives us our next
objective, and give more hints about Da'at Yichud's back story. It's pretty cool stuff.
Did I mention that the basic gameplay involved in the escape is stomping around in a giant nazi robot shooting people with a minigun and a rocket launcher? Because it is!
