Let's Play SMW Hacks 101 - Part 1: Entry-Level Tests
Merry Christmas, everyone! I have a nice surprise here...you know how I said I wouldn't really be LPing many, if any, ROM hacks? Well, here is an exception. This is Super Mario World Hacks 101, a ROM hack of Super Mario World made by Tails_155. Its purpose differs from that of most hacks; rather than being designed purely for entertainment, the main function of this one is to help newbie hackers (and some who are more experienced) to get better at hacking. And no, in this case, I do NOT care what romhacking.net's definition of "hacking" is. The levels are full of design tips and suggestions, most with demonstrations of what they are trying to teach. Meanwhile, though, it's decently fun to play, not to mention nice-looking. And since it's fairly easy, I didn't bother to use any savestates (although I did make use of the frame-skip button...). I didn't use bsnes this time though...I had to use ZSNES. While bsnes was annoyingly slow last time (I don't know what happened, I swear! Halfway through my last set of videos, it suddenly started lagging, when it was almost fine before!), its accuracy and attention to detail also means that certain pieces of custom music, when placed in the wrong context, will either crash the sound system or mess up the echo buffer, causing extremely annoying noises to play repeatedly in the background.
This LP turned out to be only 4 videos long, and I actually recorded them all in a row. None of them pass the 15-minute mark...I know YouTube removed the limit, but it just seemed simpler to keep them under it. I don't know why. Maybe I'm too used to having the limit. (I also sort of forgot about it at first...)
