Let's Play Donkey Kong Country 3 - Part 5: Monkeys' Favorite Lake?
After beating the World 2 boss, we are now faced with a choice. Obtaining the patch from Arich and getting the hovercraft from Funky opens up a new area to access, and there are actually TWO worlds available here instead of one. I almost always do Cotton-Top Cove first, since it seems more fit for World 3...and the credits sequence shows its boss before the other one. So I consider Cotton-Top Cove World 3 and Mekanos World 4.
Anyway, the stages themselves...are pretty fun, actually! Cotton-Top Cove is the water-themed world of DKC3 (coincidentally, the music in 3-1 and 3-5 is called "Water World"), and water worlds don't seem to have a very good reputation (Sea Side in Super Mario Bros. 3 comes to mind...). But really, as water-themed stages go, the ones in here aren't bad at all. The first one, Bazza's Blockade, is the first fully-underwater stage, and it's pretty straightforward. You swim to the end while avoiding Koco (the clownfish), Lurchin (the spiky shellfish), and Bazza, a continuously-spawning, elongated, sharp-toothed fish that appears only in this stage. Enguarde makes a return appearance as well.
Next up, we have Rocket Barrel Ride, our first waterfall stage. These are rather interesting; there are three in the game, and they have a lot in common. They all involve a lot of vertical movement, they all have "barrel" in the name (and each has a type of barrel not seen in any other stage), and they all have a gimmick where you can either be in front of the water or behind it. If you're behind it, you'll fall through platforms in front of it and vice versa. So what's the barrel in this one? Why, rocket barrels, of course! They float there, and when you jump in them, they rapidly move upward and shoot the player out upon reaching a certain height. You have to use them to get up to platforms, around bees, and stuff.
Finally, we have Kreeping Klasps, the third and last lakeside stage, which looks like a repaletted version of Lakeside Limbo or Tidal Trouble. Nibbla is up to his old tricks again, lying in wait to chomp the tender tootsies of anyone who dares to touch the water lining the bottom of the stage. You spend most of the time high above the water, on ropes overpopulated by a rather annoying enemy named Klasp, who lives in an explosive orange barrel and moves back and forth along the rope. Jump over all the Klasps and into any bonus barrels you can reach to clear this one.
