Let's Play Spec Ops: The Line | Chapter 2: The Dune | Underneath | The Refugees
Welcome back to Spec Ops: The Line, a soft reboot of the Spec Ops franchise that changes up the formula, turning a series that was originally meant to be a tactical shooter into a narrative masterpiece. While the game still has remnants of its Tactical Shooter roots, the gameplay focuses far more on the story of Captain Martin Walker, who enters a war-torn Dubai in order to rescue a man he admires, John Konrad, after an evacuation mission involving the 33rd Mountain Battalion goes awry. What they find waiting for them in Dubai sets the stage for an explorative and less-mentioned side of warfare that is seldom seen or talked about.
Following the tracks the not-so-long surviving member of the Alpha Patrol talked about, Captain Martin Walker finds himself in what appears to be The Nest. The next order of business is to infiltrate the structure and locate friendly forces in hopes of getting a better grasp of the situation at hand.
However, before they can get inside, they are met with heavy resistance from the locals. Mowing through their ranks, they find themselves inside a hotel when the sand sinks in and even weirder, broadcasts of music and statements in English as if the place had been an American base all along.
After eliminating all resistance in their way, they are surprised to find an American leading the locals. Following the man deeper into the lair, they finally find themselves in what can only be assumed to be the Nest. Within, they find makeshift shelters built for many locals affected by the sandstorms and the resultant collapse of civilisation, as well as the systemic execution of many American Soldiers. Moving ahead, they find themselves looking at the same American interrogating an American soldier for information.
Providing a chance for the interrogatee to rescue himself, they learn that the man was from the CIA and that the soldier actually belongs to the 33rd Mountain. The soldier tells them about his leadership before disappearing.
Moving ahead, they find a lot of American soldiers shepherding the locals and executing them, probably as a form of retribution. Taking swift, decisive action, they decide to intervene and save the locals. After eliminating all friendly resistance, they find themselves unwelcome among the locals and head onwards to try and find Lt. Col. John Konrad as per the original mission parameters.
