Offline, the Trance den is about as appealing as your average crackhouse. Online, it's a party that nobody wants to leave. This is a problem; Jinsil, who's paranoid about CEL listening in, wants the virtual space cleared before she'll share what she knows. Latha is thus tasked with getting each user to log off, willingly or otherwise. A laborious process, this puts her in touch with an interesting cross-section of humanity, and reveals more about the unenviable state of the world. Along the way, we learn more about Vargas' scientific supergroup and their mysterious project. Turns out it's none other than the creation of Central itself: the first AI sophisticated enough to manage a city. An ambitious project, it naturally fell apart when Baxter murdered Viksha for as yet unknown reasons. Yet somehow Central was finished regardless...
