Magic allows you to do wondrous things but gathering the ingredients for those spells is a time consuming process, no matter how to acquire them. Having lots of levels in certain skills helps in gaining magicoins which you can use to buy certain ingredients. Dave doesn't have those skills, so getting a reasonable amount of them is going to be difficult. The more basic ingredients can be bought for simoleons and others still can be traded for, plus you'll always get a small amount of magicoins whenever you move house. You can use that to your advantage and continually move in and our of a lot after collecting the coins, but we're not going to be doing that.

While some magic spells can do things entirely impossible without a touch of the arcane, most other incantations are more akin to a method to 'storing' an action for a later time, be it cleaning the dishes or improving a relationship. If the investment of time is worth it depends on the player and they have the chance of backfiring badly if certain conditions are met (usually the person you're casting on having a wand or a bad mood), making spellcasting a bit of a risk.

For Dave it's going to take a lot of effort to get some decent reagents for a more complicated spell then the charm he made last time, but we'll get there in the end. After all, it's not like something's going to happen that'll derail his efforts to become a grand mage. He and Yvette have decent jobs, lots of high quality items and Dog to keep the company, what could possibly happen?
