Let's Play Golden Sun 67: Venus Lighthouse Aerie
Having scaled nearly all the Venus lighthouse, only the aerie remains. Since the party haven't encountered Saturos and Menardi during their ascent, the aerie is the only place that group can be. If Isaac and his friends are fast, they might be able to stop the beacon from being lit by defeating Saturos and Menardi, thus saving the world from potential destruction and rescuing Sheba, Jenna and Kraden. If they fail, then the world is surely doomed.
There's no turning back now. Well, technically there is but there's nothing back there for us. The only way is forwards to the end of the game, to the final battle.
Unfortunately, the ending of this game is not only where it has some one of its hardest fights (Deadbeard is by far the most challenging), it also has some of the worst dialogue and decisions made by characters that are dumb. There were far better ways to move the plot forward how they wanted to without ham-fisting things to point of absurdity. It takes away from a scene that should be tense and dramatic, the culmination of all the efforts of the party to track down their sworn foes.
Except there's actually very little tension because the group have barely interacted with their foes. They've only faced them in four instances: three years before the beginning, in Vale at the start, the Mercury Lighthouse in the first third of the game and finally here right at the end. There's been such a long gap since the group's last encounter and they've been so few that Saturos and Menardi don't get enough time to have their characters develop or to show how nefarious they are or even why they're doing what they're doing. Instead the group tend to hear of what they've done from other NPCs after they've moved through an area, an ineffective way of building them up as fleshed out foes.
There's definately some development in the final section, though there'll be little chance to see it fleshed out here as the final fight is soon upon us. Since we've defeated Deadbeard we shouldn't have too many issues, but overconfidence is a slow and insidious killer.
It's always good to remind yourself of that.
