Let’s Play Ultima IX #65: I’ve got a Bone to Pick with Covetous
It’s time for the next dungeon, one whose difficulty depends entirely on where your strengths lie. The are three gimmicks gimmicks of Covetous, first of which is that it’s full of undead that are difficult to permanently take care of. Second and more concerning is that magic doesn’t work within the dungeon. This is different to Deceit where magic did work but we couldn’t cast it; attempts to cast spells fizzle, our magic weapons deal normal damage and drinking potions does nothing. Spells cast before you enter the dungeon persist until they naturally end, however, an oversight that I’m going to take full advantage of. Serpentwyne works normally on account of it not being magical.
The final gimmick of the dungeon isn’t intentional but it’s something you need to keep in mind: game crashes. Covetous isn’t the most stable of places and earthquakes are semi-frequent and they can cause the game to crash to desktop. Combat can also cause crashes and there’s a lot of in here, so now more than ever I need to remember to save early and save often.
Always remember to save, not just in games which are unstable. Even if you’re doing a ‘one save slot’ run, always have a backup anyway just in case something bad happens that corrupts or erases your save. To be extra save, have a second backup save a little behind your current position in the game and make a backup of those saves in a different place on our computer, just to be sure.
