Dupre was one of the people brought to Sosaria by Lord British and was first seen in Ultima II where he asked the Stranger whether he wanted to purchase a duck. He helped Lord British explore the lands in the time of Exodus and uncovered the wondrous city of Dawn, a place that sadly is no more. It was during the Stranger’s quest to become an Avatar that Dupre, now a paladin, joined him on his journey and became not just one of the eight companions of virtue, but one of the Avatar’s closest friends.

Time and time again, Dupre took the fight to evil and worked alongside the Avatar and his companions to save Britannia, going above and beyond what was expected of him. Always virtuous, if a bit of a heavy drinker, Dupre was shaken to his core when possessed by one of the Bane of Wantomness, whereupon he slaughtered the people of Monitor through means of an army of goblins and monsters that he commanded. Overcome with guilt for the deaths he believed he’d caused, it was he who made the ultimate sacrifice in the Avatar’s stead to ensure balance was restored to the universe, his soul forever bound to the chaos serpent.

Unfortunately, none of this is going to be mentioned in this game. Those who had never played Serpent Isle and don’t take time to research the plot of that game or the character will instead believe that Dupre perished through more mundane means, perhaps in battle against the Guardian’s servants. They also won’t know that the joke about procuring a duck is one that makes a return both in Ultima V and VI, much to the paladin’s dismay by the time of the Gargoyle Wars.
