Let's Play Yoshi's Island - Part 17: Marching Onward, Never Looking Back
I get halfway through World 4 on my half-birthday. Nice.
Today's stages are rather fun, if you ask me...but I still managed to die several times on them. (Most of the deaths, however, were me suiciding due to missing a point item.) 4-3: Don't Look Back! is the first, an athletic stage with gimmick platforms that count down when you jump on them and disappear in a puff of smoke if they get down to 0. They're not too threatening on their own, but this stage combines them with various enemies hovering around them. This one has a good number of Koopas, too...and Koopas in conjunction with moving platforms and Wild Ptooie Plants. There are also various types of balloons, some of them friendly and some not so much. If you're going for 100 points, though, the nastiest part about this stage is the coin-carrying Shy-Guys...some of them are placed in rather tricky locations. They are responsible for me having a score of 99 points in 4-3 for a good while as a kid.
Then there's 4-4: Marching Milde's Fort. It is pretty long, but fun. It starts out in an area that, oddly enough, doesn't have fortress music or graphics at all! Here, you just have to avoid some falling Chomps and outrun a larger one that chomps away the very ground behind you...! The end of this room leads you to the main part of the fortress, where you have a choice of four doors. You must go through them all, as each contains a key that will unlock one of a series of four doors in the middle of the room that lead to the boss. Each of the four doors has a small chamber next to it that shows you one of the things in it, as follows:
Door 1: Potted Spiked Funguys. They're all over in here, as well as Blowhards and Piranha Plants. There are a couple of Arrow Lifts in here too (did you know that they come in blue now as well?) and some destroyable dirt walls. The key is in the upper-left corner behind a Wild Ptooie Plant.
Door 2: Spikes (the thorn kind). This room is full of Snifits, Bandits, and Bullet Bill blasters, as well as some green bricks that are fun to destroy. The key is almost directly under the entrance, but you have to go through the gauntlet of enemies to reach it. This is the longest area of the four.
Door 3: Lava. The first half has you going left across a large lava area on moving platforms, and the second area has you going right across an equally large pool of lava with enemies ready to spit said lava at you. This is the shortest area of the four.
Door 4: Grunts. These are spike-helmeted enemies that, to my knowledge, don't appear in any other stage. This room is crawling with them, and there are Arrow Lifts, spikes, and tilting platforms to worry about as well.
With the keys, you can go through a series of doors to reach the other Middle Rings and the boss door. Marching Milde himself is, honestly, kind of pathetic. (That didn't stop me from getting hit and suiciding, though...) Kamek turns an ordinary Mini Milde into one that is anything but mini, but the boss doesn't seem to know that. He just walks back and forth as he did when he was still a minor enemy, and you defeat him by pounding the ground on top of him, which causes him to split into two smaller Mildes (64x64, I assume). If you pound one of those, it splits into two smaller 32x32 Mildes, and if you pound one of those, it splits into four regular 16x16 Mini Mildes. This is the only boss that you can actually swallow and make an egg out of after pounding on him enough (literally).
Four stages in World 4 down, four to go (not counting the Extra), and I just beat 4-4. May the fours be with you.
