Let's Play Yoshi's Island - Part 8: Mysteries of the Lakitu
These two stages are easy enough to get through normally (for the most part), but they do have quite a bit to do with respect to side paths and the like.
First is 2-5: Watch Out For Lakitu. Lakitu does make his first appearance in this stage, but whether or not you have to watch out for him much...well, considering that a) most of the time, you can simply stick your tongue out upward and get rid of him, and b) he doesn't drop Spinies in this game, but rather just throws projectiles at you, he poses very little of a threat. Beyond that, 2-5 is a colorful, flowery athletic stage with a few new enemies and, as mentioned, a good number of little bonus areas to find. Just make sure not to break right through the dirt that forms most of the floor in the first area. There's also a !-switch that I missed during my playthrough (I had to check its location in the editor)...and the train morph appears for the first time. It's definitely one of the weirder transformations in this game...you can shrink and travel on tracks drawn on the walls. The second area of the stage requires a bit more care; while you no longer have to worry about the floor crumbling away, you do have to worry about nasty surprises from some enemies...and Fly Guys flying away with red coins before you can grab them! This stage actually feels quite short, if only because it's VERY linear if you do not enter any of the secret areas.
Speaking of linear, however, 2-6: The Cave of the Mystery Maze...is not. This maze, however, is for exploration, not frustration. You begin the stage above ground near a long vertical shaft with lots of side passages containing items. One of them has the door to the main and largest area of the stage, which contains most of the goodies that the first area doesn't...including my favorite bonus minigame ever! There are plenty of nooks and crannies to explore here for coins and the like. Once again, though, if you just want a quick path to the exit, this part is laughably quick: all you really have to do is drop a bouncy arrow down and use it to bounce to the top. Just watch out for...things... Oddly, after getting through this "mystery maze" and the next room, you wind up in...a castle area with a cave background? Whatever. That sublevel leads up back up to the surface, which is also not very maze-like, although it does at least contain the last flower.
