Let's Play Yoshi's Island - Part 14: The Wet and the Wild
World 3, we find, keeps its jungle/swamp theme all the way to the end, and 3-7 and 3-8 are no exception.
3-7, Monkeys' Favorite Lake, is another swamp one. (The name says it all...this stage has lots of water and, of course, lots of monkeys.) You even start out in water. While water covers most of the bottom of this stage, however, the canopy covers most of the top. The first room has Shyguys on stilts, which we haven't seen in a while, but of course, the main attraction is the monkeys. Many of them here are on on vines dropping various unpleasant things on you. After coming to a pile of stone blocks, you enter the next room, in which the crab enemies, Dizzy Dandies (which appeared in 2-8 and 3-4), and spear-carrying Shyguys return. This room has a lot of trees on the bottom that must be jumped across. The main threat in the third and final area is another enemy that I hate, the Lunge Fish. It's not as bad as the Frog Pirates, but it comes out of the water goes back down, and then comes up again to attack and EAT you. (That's what I don't like about them, the eating part.) They appear only in this stage, however, and only in this room.
3-8 (or should I say 3-8: Naval Piranha's Castle) is another rather interesting one. Most of this stage takes place in the sewers, where there are narrow passages, flowing currents of water, nasty ghost blobs, and piranhas...of both the plant and fish variety. Well, the boss is based off a Piranha Plant, and since Piranha Plants are usually associated with pipes, the sewer theming makes sense. There are several side passages to find here, so be on the lookout. There is one room that sort of trains you for fighting the boss: an open area with a normal castle background instead of the sewer one, in which you have to ricochet eggs to make them skip off water. Beyond that, though, the castle is pretty much the same all the way through: sewer pipes, rock walls, piranhas, Piranha Plants, Wild Ptooie Plants, and ghost blobs, with a few Nippers and wall-following raven enemies thrown in for good measure. The red door is at the end of a nondescript hallway.
Naval Piranha herself is an interesting boss. (Yes, I said "her"...supposedly, it is a female giant mutant evil plant creature. But then, so was the Piranha Plant boss I made.) She is actually the only one that can be defeated *before* Kamek comes; just as you can shoot normal Piranha Plants before they swell up to full size, so too can you shoot Naval Piranha, which prompts Kamek to come in and say "OH, MY!" (in a double-sized font, even!). Fighting Naval Piranha legitimately, though, isn't hard either. She charges forward to ram you, although she sometimes fakes you out and goes only halfway. She spits three Nipper spores upward so that you have ammo with which to fight her. She sends her two spiked arms down under you to jab you. Unfortunately, most of her attacks outright never happen if you defeat her quick enough; I don't know what determines when she performs which attack, but I can very often get her to do nothing but the ramming attack. (She also spit Nipper spores once in the video.) To defeat her, you must ricochet an egg off the wall so that it hits the conspicuous bulging yellow X on her body. (Maybe it's supposed to be a navel, or bellybutton? Kamek did mention that in his message.) Poor Naval Piranha...she is one of my favorite bosses, but she doesn't put up enough of a fight.
World 4 is now officially unlocked! But something else is as well, and you know what that is...
