Let's Play Yoshi's Island - Part 28: Chthonic Craziness, Subterranean Tedium
Yes, it really did take me over half an hour to get through these two stages. This is the longest LP video I've made yet, although the time could probably have been cut in half had I done everything perfectly the first time. But of course, that never happens, now, does it?
First comes one of my most hated stages, 6-5: The Very Loooooong Cave. With a name like that, you might expect tedium...and you'd be right. It isn't the actual level design in this one that is annoying; it's the auto-scroll...ugh, the autoscroll. This stage has it from beginning to end, with the exception of maybe one screen, and it makes this stage take a LOT longer than it should. (It does create an interesting loop, though, where part of the stage actually have to be passed through twice in different directions.) Past that, this is a typical cave stage, notable for featuring both fire and ice (icicles + lava and fire enemies). There are three parts to this one, the second being an area that is a darn pain to get to, but is optional if you're not going for 100 points. (I hate trying for a perfect score on this stage...) In the first area, you go right for a while, then down, left, up, and back to the right again, looping around to the entrances to the next area, avoiding the icicles on the top of the cave and the lava on the bottom all the way through. In the optional second area, there are no enemies, but you must shoot through the dirt walls that are in the way, some of which are in rather awkward locations. In the third area, the screen scrolls faster, which at least makes the level take less time to get through...but it has the nasty side effect of making the last few red coins quite a pain to get. Pray that you don't scroll all four of them off the screen and have to do the entire stage over...! Besides that, though, most of the third area is at least easy to get through; the first half is pathetically simple, and the second...simply requires caution, as there are narrow steep ledges with Chomp Rocks placed so as to knock you off.
Then there is 6-6: The Deep, Underground Maze. It can take some time to get through if you don't know what you're doing, but it's really not difficult at all, with the possible exception of getting a perfect score. There are two basic sections to this stage, both of which focus on finding your way through a simple maze to get the key to unlock a door. The first one is easy; all you really have to do is keep pushing the Chomp Rock through the area, and you should beat it. The second one is more complex, but still nothing too threatening; just memorize the layout of the level and don't get hit by a ghost Shy Guy, Snifit, Flamer Guy, etc. (And being good at pool might help if you want 100 points...) I vaguely recall this being a stage I used to dislike once upon a time (like 3-3 and 3-4), but it poses no significant threat to me now. The platforming is easy enough; there is only one bottomless pit in the stage (and it's right at the end, in a place where you'd have to be either an idiot or amazingly unlucky to fall in), and most of the enemies in the first half will be dispatched with the Chomp Rock.
With the completion of these two time-consuming stages, we're getting close to the end....
