The final ‘game’ isn’t a unique game per say, consisting of all the others games in a compilation of impossibility. To clear Challenge, all you need do is complete the final level of every single game in the collection with just four lives for all of them. You’ve seen all the games. You’ve seen how hard they are to complete with four lives for each of them. You’ve seen how unfair and random most of them are.

Can I somehow overcome the odds and become the Action 52 Gamemaster? No. Has anyone become the Action 52 Gamemaster? Most likely not. Is it even possible? There’s a question I don’t have the answer to.

Will I try regardless? You bet I will.

Action 52 has a lot working against it and only one thing in its favour: it is indeed a collection of 52 games. Unfortunately, those games are far from impressive. Each one is graphically inferior compared to almost all other games on the Megadrive. They all possess limited and subpar music and sound effects and suffer from poor gameplay throughout. Some of them are just too hard by design, some of them are too random to be enjoyable while others are far too easy to be fun. Add to that that the game was extremely expensive on launch – and still is now – and you’ve got a recipe for disaster that didn’t go down well with consumers. Are the games are terrible as I remember them being when I first played them many years ago? No, but they’re still very, very bad. There were few experiences that were at all enjoyable and had I of had this in my youth, I’d of hated it. Action 52 is however successful in being memorable in its terribleness, an achievement many mediocre games from the time failed. It’s a lesson that quantity does not exceed quality, that 52 awful games don’t equal one well put together one. I may have disliked Awesome Possum but not only does he kick Dr Machino’s butt, he kicks the butt of Action 52 as well. Would I recommend you give this game a try? Only if you too want to experience something that’s not at all fun to say that you have. If you’re seeking an enjoyable game, look elsewhere.

As for what’s next, I can’t say much without spoiling the next replay. It’s a game close to my heart that I absolutely love, a game that’s still heralded to this day as a fantastic experience that does so many things right. It’s also a game I’m going to be playing very differently compared to the first time around and because of that, we’ll be seeing a lot of different things that perhaps not many others have shown off before. However I play it, I know that I’m going to have tons of fun doing so as I take a long overdue trip down memory lane.

See you next let’s play!
