The Unseen University is a prominent organisation within the city, possessing some of the most brilliant minds on the disc – and a couple of the worst – but there are people with more power. One could argue that the thieves and assassins guilds are roughly on the same level of influence though the three would all bitterly contest this but none of them match the reach and authority of the Patrician.

Being at the top in Ankh-Morpork is far from easy as the long list of short lived patricians will attest but the current one has managed to retain their position for a very long time. No-one is quite sure whether that is through bribery, a magical pact or being a competent leader people actually like but no-one can deny that he’s the best at what he does. A very busy man that still manages to find time to complete the daily crossword puzzle in the paper, he’s both the best and the worst person to bring very serious problems to as you’ll see soon enough.
