The first act of the game wisely limits you to just a few locations within the city of Ankh-Morpork to ensure that you don’t get overwhelmed with places, things and people. It also keeps our initial objective short and simple, collecting a few vaguely cryptic items that the university needs to create a dragon detecting radar thingy. Even with those limits, there are still places that are entirely optional to visit in the first act but that you can still go to to talk to people and grab a few items you’ll need later.

Later acts not only increase the number of important locations but also continue to make certain old locations relevant by adding new puzzles for you to solve. It does this quite gradually to begin with but later on you truly can feel swamped by what you can do and where you can go. If ever that happens, always remember to focus on your current objective and use that to narrow down where you think will be important. Also remember that the game has no lose state, meaning you don’t have to worry about doing something that dooms your save forever.
