We may have had some bad terror missions in the past, but nothing compares to what we’re facing now. Snakemen are tougher than floaters and sectoids, though they can’t fly and they lack psionic powers. They’re also seem to be more likely to throw grenades compared to the other aliens we’ve encountered, but they’re not the real threat here. That dubious honour goes to the cryssalids, one of the most terrifying opponents we’ll ever face in this game.

They’re well armoured, can move a lot in a turn and have deadly claws. All who they hit are zombified, doomed to have a cryssalid burst out of their bodies one way or another, allowing the spread of the horrible monsters to continue. Able to quickly cover a lot of grounds and hit multiple people in a single turn, their only saving grace is that they don’t have a ranged weapon and can’t fly. They are what make terror missions so terrifying, turning the civilians you’re meant to be saving into more enemies to kill. If you’re not careful they’ll overwhelm you and turn an already bad mission into an utter disaster, so you need to approach them with the caution they deserve and fight accordingly.

In other terror missions we’ve tried to move across the map to save the innocents on the battlefield, but we can’t afford to do that here. Our best chance of success is to find an easily defensible position and wait for the aliens to come to us, picking them off as they trickle towards our part of the map. This does doom any civilians not close to where we landed but they were likely doomed anyway; there’s little we can do for them but kill the creatures that slay them as they make their way to us, if we can even do that. With a terror mission like this, everything is up in the air and how the whole battle goes can be determined in the first few critical turns.
