Let's Try: Depth of Extinction
I picked this game up from the Racial Justice bundle from itch.io.
Depth of Extinction is a lot of games all kinda rolled into one. It's kind of X-Com, with it's cover/fire/special move mechanics; it's like Pathway, with it's openish world choose your own adventure (with gas); and it's like other games like that whose name escapes me right now. You are part of a fragmented group of humanity who are just trying to survive. A robot tells you to get a McGuffin and then away you go!
What I liked:
- The art style
- The whole levelling system with the abilities and stats
- The fact that you get to choose your own adventure
- That you go in and out of combat on a map
- The various classes really do feel different pretty quickly
There's a lot to like in this game, but it's all just... not quite there. I had issues with the fact that you cannot Overwatch with multiple units on the same target; you cannot see the overwatch range of your enemies at all (that I could find out); and combat is difficult and ends up feeling more like a chore than it should. Also I got the game to hang 3 times simply by having an enemy go into cover, which is _extremely_ frustrating.
I want to like this game, I really do, but everything frustrated me just a little too much for it to be fun. Well, that and the game hanging 3 times in an hour.
