Magic Knight Rayearth is a Jrpg for the Super Nintendo/Famicom, it was released in 1995 and based on the Anime of the same name. The game was Developed by Pandora Box, and Published by TOMI. The English patch Fan-Translation was released in 1999 by LNF Translations, and.. RPGe.

STORY: 16/20
Three girls are summoned from another world by a Princess to become the Magic Knights of legend to save the World of invading monsters and an evil powerful knight who's hell bent on destruction.

GRAPHICS: 15/20
The game's graphics are very bright and cartoony looking, which ain't surprising considering it's based on the Anime. Art work for characters is nice, including the face pictures used during dialogue. The world you explore on is again nice and bright, and battle scenes all look great too. Character models look chibi(ish) but I feel that monsters could have done with a little more work, they don't fit well along side the main characters or backgrounds. Magic spells and skills look nice, I have seen better but then yeah.. 1995, and all that.

SOUND: 15/20
I love this game's OST, I like all the tunes and n my opinion they don't get old or boring. The game has quite a lot of sound effect, most are okay but there ARE a few annoying ones.. such as that damn Monoko "FUU FUU" sound, I want to strangle the strange thing. Spell sound effect are nice and work well depending on the spell. Again, i've heard much better OST and SFX on the system but what there is for this game, it suits it mostly.

GAMEPLAY: 14/20
This is your generic Jrpg gameplay, explore the world, fight random monsters, defeat the bosses, visit boring towns and talk to NPCs to get some direction, move on and repeat again. There's really no systems that stands out to me to make this stand out from other Jrpgs of the time and this is probably why this one has so much stuff going against it for many people. The menu system is easy to use and navigate, nicely designed and not cluttered. The use of a tent to rest and save is quite a nice addition though honestly unnecessary because there's just so many save spots around that heal you too. Encounters for battles can get a bit much in some places, probably forcing you to cheat and use some Pro codes to turn battles off at some point. L or R is used for the run button, which to me is real odd choice for the game.

TRANSLATION: 18/20
This game's translation is really great, I didn't come across any problems with it like overflow of text, or graphical glitches. I have noticed there's a few translation errors but unless you've watched the Anime then you probably won't even notice, like Princess Emurald is meant to be Princess Emerald. All in all, it's a really great effort by the fan translators.

OVER ALL: 78/100
Over all I think this is an underrated Jrpg for the system, and a real pleasure to play.. even with it's flaws. Do I recommend it now? YES! it's certainly one of those hidden gems in my eyes.
