Metroid II: Return of Samus [GB] Playthrough #01, Area 1: Metroids 39-34

Metroid II is easily among the best games ever made for the Nintendo GameBoy. It takes place after the original NES Metroid. Samus's mission is to go to SR388 and exterminate the Metroids before evil forces can unleash them on the galaxy. The play control in this game is surprisingly refined compared to the original, with Samus being able to fire up, down, left, and right. She can also duck to fire at leg level. Like the original, this game has different endings based on how long Samus takes to complete her mission. The best ending can be viewed by completing the game in under three hours, which is pretty generous.
After viewing the title screens and listening to the title theme, we start the game and join our heroine, Samus Aran, who is arriving on the surface of SR388 (time 2:10). She starts equipped a little better than in the original Metroid. She has a full 99 units of energy and 30 missiles. Radar shows that 39 Metroids are left. She starts out by entering the main shaft of SR388.
After going down a ways, she bears left and eventually reaches Metroid 39 (time 3:42). As she approaches, this creature mutates into the weakest Metroid upgrade, the Alpha Metroid. Alphas only require five Missiles to defeat and do not need to be frozen. Pretty easy. Don't get used to it. After this Metroid is defeated, a quake occurs, draining acid from Area 1.
To the right of where she arrived, she finds the first save station (time 4:47).
Continuing on through the main shaft, she enters Area 1 (time 5:46). There are four Metroids to slaughter here. That liquid that my palette has turned blue is acid, so watch out.
As she proceeds, she comes to Area 1's ruins (time 6:52). Behind a missile door (time 7:12), she finds the Bomb and Missile Expansion 1. Soon thereafter, she finds Energy Tank 1 (time 7:57).
After exiting the ruins, Samus soon finds a most interesting power up, the Spider Ball (time 8:40). This is needed just to get out of the area where it is found.
Using the Spider Ball, Samus can find Metroid 38, Alpha Metroid #02 (time 9:11).
Back in the ruins, she finds the Ice Beam behind another missile door (time 9:53). She also finds Missile Expansions 2, 3, and 4 (time 10:26). The Spider Ball is helpful in getting the last.
Farther up in the ruins, she finds Missile Expansions 5 and 6 (time 11:30).
Then, she heads to the deeper part of Area 1. Eventually she finds Metroid 37, Alpha Metroid #03 (time 13:26). Farther on, she finds Metroid 36, Alpha Metroid #04 (time 14:07). Finally, she locates Metroid 35, Alpha Metroid #05 (time 14:39). When this last one is killed, a second quake drains the acid farther.
After leaving Area 1, Samus follows the main shaft to the next area (time 16:39). She soon reaches more acid and heads to Area 2 (time 17:18). This large area features eight Metroids to kill.
Before reaching the main expanse of Area 2, Samus runs across Metroid 34, Alpha Metroid #06 (time 17:53).
As she enters Area 2's ruins, Samus finds a save station, where she signs off.
Thanks for watching!
