Metroid: Other M - Hunter vs. Kihunter (Part 6)
Samus’s Log: “The Zeroes are an interesting species I’ve encountered many times in my career. Aggressive and hardy, they can evolve into the powerful Kihunters, which have ties with the Space Pirates. To find them in the Bottle Ship is disconcerting. Have the Space Pirates infiltrated this facility as well? And then there is this small, white creature yet again. Could it have let loose that howl? Is it following me? I’ve already decimated every other creature in my path, so why can’t I take this one out? I fear there is something more sinister at work…something or someone keeping me from acting of my own free will…”
_______________
Had some minor instances of me getting turned around at the start here, so apologies for that cut. This was getting to the end of my first session, so I was getting a little out of it. I also decided to split this episode up, so every single episode won’t be 20 minutes after all. There was just a bit too much going on in it!
Samus continues her trek through the Biosphere, and we’re introduced to some sentient vines which play a role later on in the ensuing boss battle. Here we get the grand introduction to the Kihunters and their baby forms, Zeroes. A common enemy throughout the Metroid series, they tend to be pretty fearsome, but they’re not so bad here. Especially when Samus can RIP THEIR WINGS OFF WITH HER BARE HANDS. That’s kinda brutal. That or she just whips them across the room. I guess she’s tired of dealing with them.
Our battle with the nest of Kihunters follows a simple beat: fight a wave of Kihunters, attack the flowers that support the nest, rinse and repeat until the nest falls and reveals King Kihunter. But uh…aren’t insects run by queens usually? Oh, I guess we already have Mother Brain, can’t have TWO female rulers…I dunno. King Kihunter relies entirely on its hive to survive, which our nifty new Diffusion Beam rips through quite well. Not even a challenge.
And here’s the creeper chick thing…OK, Samus at this point you should have tons of red flags going off but still you do nothing? You don’t even consult Adam? Nice of Adam to stay silent throughout that entire sequence too. I might appreciate seeing Adam and Samus’s relationship with each other if it was…I don’t know…actually shown? Give them non-expositional dialogue together? No? Well, at least he opened the door for us. That’s something, right?
Onwards!
