After Eva leaves, Snake heads through the cave, finding a manhole exiting back into Groznyj Grad. Armed with the C3 explosives needed to destroy both the Shagohod and the hangar where it is housed, Snake infiltrates the hangar and proceeds to place the explosives near four fuel tanks whose detonation would be more than enough to accomplish the destruction of Shagohod. However, just as Snake finishes planting the explosives and setting the timer to let the explosives detonate in 20 minutes, he is ambushed by Volgin, Ocelot and The Boss. To make matters worse, Volgin also reveals that he found out that "Tatyana" really is a spy as she was caught trying to steal the Philosophers' Legacy from an underground vault in the fortress before producing a microfilm, revealing that it is the Legacy in a sense as it contains the means to access the vast fortune. Afterwards, Volgin proceeds to brutalize Eva, intending to kill her with Eva trying to use her "kiss of death" on Volgin in order to shoot him, an attempt ending in failure. With nothing to lose, Snake pipes up, asking what Philosophers' Legacy is exactly. Volgin agrees to tell him, confident that he will be able to kill him soon afterwards. He reveals that the Legacy, a fund of 100 billion dollars, was created sometime during World War 2 by the group known as The Philosophers, a group of influential magnates from three great powers of the time, namely, United States, Soviet Union and China, in order to ensure the military defeat of the Axis Powers by funding the development of top-secret, hi-tech weaponry and projects like Cobra Unit meant to give the Allied Forces a technological edge in the war. After the war ended, Philosophers were to redistribute the money amongst themselves, however, instead, organization fractured into three separate factions that each wanted the money for themselves. Having been one of the people responsible for the group's finances during the war, Volgin's father took advantage of the post-war chaos within the Philosophers to steal the Legacy and put it into the service of the USSR by making it an illegal inheritance of his own family, the fact Volgin learned only once his father passed away. He also reveals that his ultimate goal is to force the Philosophers to reunite by ending the Cold War and ushering in a new World War, allowing the world to be "whole" again. Afterwards, he hands the microfilm containing the Legacy to The Boss for safekeeping as she also heads out to dispose of Eva. Once she leaves, Volgin voices his intention to personally kill Snake with Ocelot voicing his desire for a rematch with Snake with Volgin refusing, forcing Ocelot to watch. As the result, Volgin and Snake engage in a violent brawl within the hangar. As the fight progresses and it becomes obvious that Volgin won't be able to defeat Snake as easily as he had hoped, he orders Ocelot to shoot Snake, an order which Ocelot refuses to obey, claiming to have made a promise to The Boss that he wouldn't kill Snake. Enraged, Volgin fires an electric bolt at Ocelot who manages to redirect it using his revolver before an intercom sounds, revealing that Snake's C3 has been found. Volgin sends Ocelot off to find the explosives while he continues his fight with Snake and is ultimately defeated. With the explosion inching closer by the second, Snake escapes the hangar and is picked up by Eva who reveals that The Boss let her go and explained her motive to her with Eva promising to tell Snake what she told her later, two riding off as the hangar explodes. Despite having seemingly destroyed Shagohod and killed Volgin, Snake's and Eva's celebration is cut short as Shagohod breaks through the roof of the destroyed hangar, being piloted by still alive and enraged Volgin who proceeds to chase Snake and Eva...
