For more than fifty years, the Bundeswehr, Germany's post-war military has had a conscripted Army. It's one of the few NATO countries to retain one, and dates from the end of the Second World War to protect the homeland from a possible land invasion during the Cold War. But the Cold War threat has now gone and in July this year, subject to Parliamentary approval, there will be a historic moment when German conscription is suspended, enabling more resources and effort to be devoted to a better professional Army.
