Shadaloo should have known better than to mess with the Kanzuki zaibatsu!
Been enjoying practicing Karin again lately. Played using the Challenger's Edition hack: https://bit.ly/3CXtWVa Street Fighter Alpha 3 is one of the greatest fighting games of all time. The inclusion of so many different ways to approach situations and the surprising flexibility of systems, has kept me coming back to this for decades now. Hot off the heels of the also-excellent Street Fighter Alpha 2, this one gave the roster a much-needed bump, brought back old favorites that had not been seen in the Alpha series to date, and expanded things with new gameplay elements like the guard meter so you cant just turtle your way through situations as easily. This forces your hand in different ways and keeps the action moving, and is complimented by the other options available like Alpha Counters. As a person who likes playing the higher-pressure characters, I absolutely loved seeing these additions.

Along with SF3: Third Strike, this is where I feel the pinnacle in 2D fighting games was hit. After Third Strike I really didn't feel this level of sheer excellence in the fighters I played, until perhaps Tekken 7. That doesn't mean good ones didn't exist in the time between, it's just that they never seemed to be the "complete package" like those ones. With the "live update" model on modern fighters, even if they do hit some kind of zen with a certain update/addition, it is often quickly subject to change (with perhaps a bit of rootkit on the side, as Capcom infamously did with SFV on PC..) Sure, V-Ism in Alpha3 can be exploited in ways so it's not perfect, but even when Capcom updated the arcade version to fix these issues, players generally found the original game to be more interesting and fun to play, flaws and all. Try the 'Upper' version for extra characters and fixes.

I played the Alpha series and Street Fighter in general, mostly on consoles. Still adapting to arcade stick for some stuff I took for granted back then, like 3xPunch and 3xKick buttons. Some stuff I can do easier with stick now, other stuff I'm still learning, like being consistent with Akuma's Raging Demon, etc..

The recent training hacks are *very* helpful with catching up to speed here. Been using them lately to practice execution and it's been super-helpful. Trying to learn a game like this while playing against the CPU is an exercise in futility. You really need the testbed situation to refine positioning and technique. Take those learned-skills on a test run vs the CPU (or Fightcade!) afterwards, but just be aware that playing CPU is not a solid way to learn the game. They cut corners and do things that normal players cannot, therefore requiring different strategies in situations than you will ever use against a human opponent.
