The player controls a modular three segment spaceship, starting with a single ship and gaining two more sections after clearing enemy waves, each docking adds firepower but increases ship size and risk, each section also acts as a life, once lost it cannot be recovered.

After a set number of waves the game enters a refueling stage where the player must dock with a large mothership to refill the fuel gauge shown as a three digit number, if the last three digits of the player score match the remaining fuel they earn a bonus continue regardless of the default replay score, the game includes fast dive bombing enemy patterns, bonus point ships, and escalating wave difficulty.

Unlike Moon Cresta, rocket number one in Moon Quasar can fire multiple shots at once, but only when it is flying solo. Once it is docked with another ship rocket one can only fire one shot at a time.

Moon Quasar is a clever spin on Moon Cresta with added resource management and a more strategic scoring mechanic.
