Need for Speed 17 (The Run) - Drive Hard With A Vengeance with Porsche 918 RSR
With Need for Speed Heat on the horizon I decided to do a quick revisit of the 21 previous NFS games leading up to the launch of Heat. Here you can see Need for Speed 17 (The Run), which was released in 2011 for various platforms. In this game I recorded the Challenge Series event "Drive Hard With A Vengeance" with a Porsche 918 RSR.
NFS The Run is a somewhat unique Need for Speed game. It's not a track racing game like ProStreet or Shift but it also doesn't have an open world. Instead the game is about a run from San Francisco to New York and takes place in different iconic locations of the USA along the way.
The career mode is very short and the only other single player option is the Challenge Series. Just like in HP3 there is no quick race mode and it's not possible to just drive freely on all the tracks with a car of your choice to practice for multiplayer or just for fun.
And even in multiplayer mode you couldn't freely choose what to play because this game introduced the dreaded "Speedlist" system for it. As you can see I didn't even unlock all the cars that could be unlocked in multiplayer. That's how quickly I got tired of it.
The physics are also rather poor. I remember when the game was new I didn't find them that bad but I guess I just had low standards at the time because of some of the previous games. Playing The Run now the driving feels pretty bad. The handling is grip-based and I guess it's better than in Undercover but that's about it in terms of positives.
Just like HP3 the game is definitely worth one playthrough if you can get it for cheap but it's nothing that will be interesting for a very long time.
There was also a stupid thing with preorder bonuses when the game first came out. Depending on where you bought the game you got a code for the Underground, Most Wanted or Carbon chapter of the Challenge Series but there was no way to get all 3 of them, at least on PC. And some further DLCs were never released for PC at all, which was also a thing in a few previous NFS games already.
Like all 21 main NFS games Need for Speed The Run can be played on a modern PC with Windows 10.
I will attempt to show you all 21 existing NFS games before the release of Heat, so expect to see a video almost every day from now until the release of Heat and on some days even two. :)
