MINI-REVIEW: Well, this was a surprise! I had a lot of fun playing TOM SAWYER. It's a competent platformer which offers a touch of challenge without being frustrating, particularly because it has unlimited continues. It's only real crime is that it isn't as polished as Super Mario Bros., but then it's in good company. It's real saving grace though, which overcomes the unrefined controls, is that it is SO STRANGE. The game takes place in Tom's dreams, a la LITTLE NEMO, and this child has a very weird imagination. The diverse settings in each level, including one overhead schmup stage that evokes last week's DINO RIKI, add much charm and variety, and the bosses are also bizarre. For $4-8, this is a solid purchase if you like platform games, but if you're in it for your appreciation of the literary source material, prepare for confusion and disappointment.
