Nintendo Hits Pause On Switch 2 Pre-Orders | Higher Cost Coming Soon?
Man, Nintendo is gonna Nintendo, and some days they REALLY Nintendo, if you know what I mean. When Nintendo released the Nintendo Switch 2 system and game prices, people were understandably frustrated, disappointed, and upset. Many people theorized that, at least in the US, the recent tariffs were the reason behind these prices. Well, earlier today, Nintendo and other retailers hit pause on Switch 2 Pre-Orders because they need to decide how to now adjust to the tariffs being imposed on imported goods. Does that mean that a higher cost is coming soon?
Per the announcement from Nintendo, which we saw in an email from Best Buy:
Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in the U.S. will not start April 9, 2025 in order to assess the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions. Nintendo will update timing at a later date. The launch date of June 5, 2025 is unchanged.
So what does this mean? First and foremost, the prices of the Switch 2 hardware and games had nothing to do with tariffs. This underscores that Nintendo deliberately set the pricing at these rates. Also, any and all tariffs would only be applied to physical goods; digital-only goods aren't subject to such taxes. It also doesn't explain why the cost of the Switch 2 and the games were higher in other territories as well, as US-based tariffs would have absolutely nothing to do with the pricing in those areas. So Mario Kart World being an $80 game, that's a strategic choice by Nintendo, not a reaction to policy.
The bigger question is what will Nintendo do moving forward? Tariffs are a temporary thing, but Nintendo doesn't fluctuate prices up or down based on tax and tariff policy. Yes, goods from China and Vietnam, where Nintendo produces the Switch 2, will have tariffs assessed under current regulations. But if the US Government and Vietnam can come to a trade agreement the tariffs could be reduced or eliminated.
In the end, I see this as positioning and posturing between the current administration and other countries. The goal isn't to punish consumers but to get a more balanced trade status between different areas. It sucks, but it's part of a global economy, and right now we're all caught in the middle. I don't anticipate a further increase in the Switch 2 or the Games, I don't think Nintendo, literally or figuratively, can afford to increase prices any higher.
