I Don't Understand Who The Nintendo Switch Virtual Game Card Is For
In the March, 2025 NIntendo Direct, Nintendo unveiled a new feature called the Virtual Game Card. With this feature, which will be coming in the near future, you can treat your digital titles similarly to physical games. But, to be honest, I didn't get it. If you asked me right after the Direct I would say that I don't understand who the Nintendo Switch Virtual Game Cart Is For. But after talking to a few other people, most notably Jon from @BittyKongsQuest, I can now say I at least get it a little more.
With the Digital Virtual Game Card feature, when I saw it my first reaction was that you can already do what this service is offering. You can have one account signed in to multiple Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, Switch OLED, and I'm assuming Switch 2 systems. I didn't see the purpose or the value of it because it's one of those things that like, for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, let's say that you buy one copy digitally. You can't share that and play simultaneously between multiple systems.
Then I talked to my friend Jon over at Diddy Kong Quest, make sure you check him out I'll have a link to his channel here:

What this does is that it eliminates an issue that I hadn't thought about. With this setup, theoretically, you can now have two systems playing digital games under the same Nintendo account and not have to worry about one kicking the other offline. This was something that I didn't pick up initially. As the only one in our household that really plays games, others wouldn't launch another digital title. When I was looking at this, wondering "what's the need?", "what's the purpose?", "What problem does this fix?". This is indeed a problem that it fixes.
Now I do wish that there was a way that you could buy a game just once, and then if you have your family of systems, you could share play over Wi-Fi over your local network, like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, for example. But above and beyond that interesting concept but you still can't sell it; You can't trade it in; You can't do anything with it, you can only share it with one other system that you have in your home.
Let me know what you think of this feature. Do you think that you're going to be able to use and take advantage of it? It sounds like not only the Nintendo Switch OLED and Switch Lite is going to be able to do this, but also the Nintendo Switch 2. You do need to be near each other initially to go ahead and set that up this Interesting concept. I just don't know that I would use it. What do you think about the Virtual Game Card system?
