Nintendo ROM Hacks Gave Us Cyber Shadow
77When I started playing Cyber Shadow, I was immediately reminded of 8-bit platformers from the NES era: games like Ninja Gaiden, Mega Man, and Castlevania immediately came to mind. That’s because creator Aarne Hunziker, aka one-man developer Mechanical Head, got his first taste of game development from NES ROM hacks.
Aarne spoke with FrameWork about his history with these hacks, starting with NESticle, the world’s first emulator. Creating custom 8-bit art through this emulator eventually led Aarne to dig into various games’ codes and create his own adventure with Cyber Shadow. Our video goes deeper on this history and the key games that influenced Aarne’s work.
