How Returnal Evolved From Twin-Stick Shooters
#Returnal is the latest title from Housemarque, the studio behind twin-stick shooters like Super Stardust HD, Resogun, Matterfall, and many more. Returnal exhibits the DNA of those games, translating bullet hell mechanics into a 3D third-person shooter. It’s the natural evolution of what Housemarque created before.
It’s not only a culmination of the studio’s prior games, but also a magnetic mix of other mechanics. Roguelike influences are clear from its repeating cycle, and a handful of Metroidvania-style power-ups let you see new portions of the game’s biomes when you revisit. In this video, we take a look at how all of these inspirations and mechanics come together to form a fantastic whole.
Returnal is available now on #PS5, as one of the few true launch exclusives for the system. Yes, “launch.” Let’s be honest, the launch window for the PS5 and Series X/S is a lot wider than usual.
