This epic video tutorial shows you how to make an outline on a given sprite with a shader in GameMaker Studio.

Idea behind the whole procedure is quite simply. Take the area of the sprite which is transparent. There we have 4 checks. Each check checks if there is one unit (one texel) to the left/right/bottom/up from the current position an texel that isn't transparent. If that is the case draw on this empty space a colored pixel.
