Pak Attack: Func Map Jam 9: Contract Revoked / Knave Theme (2017) [BQTN 144d | PC w/ Quakespasm]
This segment contains my playthroughs of the maps I saved for last in Func Map Jam 9, by PuLSaR and Skacky.
00:00 - Consciousness Outpost by PuLSaR
PuLSaR's map is one of the most visually stunning of the pak (the skybox does a lot of work here). I wish I could have found more of the secrets, but some seem excessively well-hidden; e.g. I found one out of 4 switches for the secret super nailgun, only because a viewer spotted one of them at an incredibly awkward angle, and the secret seemed mostly pointless because there was one a few minutes later anyway.
54:20 - Chasing Promises by Skacky
Skacky had not one, not two, but _three_ maps in this jam (including the start map). The start map itself is extremely impressive and follows a very clean or dare I say "vanilla" knave style, and Chasing Promises continues in the same vein. This map has a variety of interesting areas and challenges, but unfortunately suffers from overuse of Quoth's worst enemy. There are several arena battles, one of which includes 4 gugs (even on normal difficulty). The problem with this is that when gugs don't have line of sight to you (which multiple are likely not to in this section at any given time), they will stomp the ground... which still causes damage, and also makes it damn near impossible to aim or really understand anything going on thanks to the ridiculous amount of screen-shake that ensues. This causes the final arena battle especially becomes unnecessarily brutal and frustrating.
2:18:47 - A Dream of Dead Stars by Skacky
Skacky has one more map in this jam, which is not referenced in the readme at all. Earlier I stumbled across one of the switches required to access it and hunted the rest of them down, but I figured I would save the secret map for last. This map goes for a somewhat darker and grittier feel in a void setting, and provides an interesting introduction by way of the player immediately falling through various sections of the map (including a secret, which I spent some time to find later). This map is quite a bit shorter than Chasing Promises, and its final arena felt far less brutal (only 2 gugs is an improvement).
These maps were a spectacular finish to a phenomenal map jam that far exceeded my expectations. I have to wonder how Func Map Jam X will measure up to this...
