Pak Attack: Retro Jam 1 & 2 (2014) [BQTN 146 | PC w/ Quakespasm]
After finishing playing through the Func Map Jams, I wanted to check out the Retro Jams, as they feature plenty of familiar names. These seem to be significantly smaller-scale endeavors than the Func Map Jams, but while the maps may be shorter, they're still solid quality.
Retro Jam 1: Medieval/Castle Theme
00:00 - Intro
06:32 - Foetid Grotto by EricW
13:08 - Arlyeh Center for Heart Diseases by MFX (rebalanced version)
35:20 - A Little Taste by Scampie
38:59 - Dysnystaxis (...A Chance Meeting with Somnus) by Skacky
55:47 - Castle of the Fallen by Sock
I certainly appreciate exploring a good medieval or castle map. I had already played the expanded version of Sock's map which originated in this jam, so I somewhat fast-tracked through the original. Apart from that, MFX's map probably stands out the most for being fun to explore - no big surprise, as MFX usually sets a high bar as well. Skacky's map was kind of hard to appreciate, as it had some rather unreasonably tight and crowded combat, including a couple of heavy hitters the moment you arrive at the top of an elevator.
Retro Jam 2: Fantasy Brick Cities in the Skies
1:24:06 - A Bleak and Diabolic Dream by RickyT23
1:44:19 - Geometry of Murder by Skacky
2:03:22 - Sky Eater by Sock
This theme certainly had potential for quite the breathtaking views. In that respect, I think Skacky easily steals the show, with a far more well-balanced offering than his entry in the first jam. We're also graced with a RickyT map, though possibly one of his simplest (though arguably it's easily the most "retro" in the pak because of it - a lot of maps in these paks seem to hardly warrant that adjective). Sock's map in this set didn't really tickle my fancy - I'm not a huge fan of void maps, and this otherwise feels rather abstract and linear. it kind of reminded me of parts of One Thousand Cuts (released months earlier), which was not one of my favorites.
