Paper Mario Playthrough 22: The Big Lantern Ghost
After exploring more of Shy Guy's Toy Box, and finding some of the stolen items, Mario accesses more areas of the Toy Box, where he has to solve puzzles, which can only be done with the help of Russ T. of Toad Town. He then comes across the Big Lantern Ghost, who prefers dark areas, and then find the leader of the Shy Guys.
As for the rest of the description, I recommend watching the full video before reading past this point of the description
I did consider doing Green Station for this video, and have Red Station be the final part, but as Green Station went really quick, I decided to have both for this video, including the boss fight. Starting with Green Station, there are four coloured boxes, and interesting fact, the first Shy Guy you encounter has four different coloured Shy Guys, and this is the order you hit the boxes in, you make use of Bow to pass through the gates on the conveyor belts, the Shy Guy is holding the Mystery Note, which we can give to Russ T. to solve the puzzle, but he doesn't have his Dictionary yet, so we need to find that as well. There is the slot machine, where you can get coins or fight Shy Guys, and at the end, with the help of Parakarry, is either a Pokey, Super Soda, or a Koopatrol, and you have to fight two of those enemies. The Koopatrols are spiky enemies, if you have Spike Shield equipped, you can jump on them to flip them over, they can charge up and their attack deals 10 damage if it hits, use Bow's Outta Sight to avoid that if they charge up, and they can call in reinforcements. After that, you can get the Dictionary, which you give to Russ T., and he tells you to hit yellow, green, red, and blue in that order, which was the order of the Shy Guys that drop the Mystery Note. This allows you to access Red Station.
When you arrive at Red Station, you get to do some platforming, there is a hidden badge block that gives Deep Focus, when using Focus while this badge is equipped, your Star Energy charges more than usual, this does not affect your partners if Group Focus is equipped. You will see a Super Block, there is a partner you do get very soon that you will want to upgrade, so even if you have some partners to upgrade, I would wait till you get that party member. When you enter the dark room, it is time to fight the Big Lantern Ghost, he cannot be attacked while the room is dark, you have to attack his lantern to light up the room, the best way is to use Bow's Smack on the lantern, the Big Lantern Ghost has 40 HP, and for attacks, he blows his lantern to make the room darker, he does like a flash attack that can hurt your partner, and his jump attack deals 5 damage.
After defeating the Big Lantern Ghost, hammer his lantern, and you will free Watt, who was held captive by the Big Lantern Ghost, and she is our next party member, and yes, Watt is female by the way, she is a Li'l Sparky, which first appeared in Super Mario World, and they only appeared in a few other games, like Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and Super Princess Peach. Watt's main attack is Electro Dash, this move ignores Defense, and Power Shock paralyzes one enemy. When upgraded, Watt learns Turbo Charge, which boosts Mario's Attack for a few turns, I recommend upgrading Watt with the Super Block.
Outside of battle, Watt can light up dark areas, and she can even reveal hidden blocks. What you have to do is go to the east room, and use Bombette to blow up the wall, and this leads to the end, where we meet General Guy, the leader of the Shy Guys.
There are multiple phases of that fight, first up is the Shy Squad, there are 15 Shy Guys, and their HP matches the amount of Shy Guys, dealing damage removes one Shy Guy from the Shy Squad, and their attack deals 1 damage per Shy Guy, and if a few Shy Guys remain, they will run away, if you have Defend Plus, the Shy Guys cannot damage you.
Next up is the Stilt Guys, they appeared in Yoshi's Story and some of the Yoshi's Island games, and they become regular Shy Guys when you jump on them. Next are the Shy Stack, if you have Spin Hammer, you can knock the Shy Guy off, and their attack deals damage based on the number of Shy Guys in the Shy Stack, otherwise Kooper can knock then down.
After that, it is time to fight General Guy, he has 30 HP, and he is inside his tank, the bulb has 8 HP, and it shoots lightning that can hurt your partner, it does not work against Watt, so take out the bulb first. Watt is the best partner for this, as her Electro Dash ignores General Guy's Defense, he can be a tough boss, so I recommend using Turbo Charge to boost Mario's Attack to get in some good damage.
After beating General Guy, we have freed the fourth Star Spirit, and one thing I want to go over, there was a glitch where if you lose a battle with Watt as your active party member, Nintendo 64 - Nintendo Switch Online would crash, and it would delete all your save data, it would be recommended if you used save states, this was fixed, but it was a thing back then.
