Penguin-kun Wars Famicom / NES CRT TV Playthrough asmr
Released 12/25/1985, Penguin-kun Wars for Famicom is a port by ASCII of ULP's arcade game of the same name. You play as a penguin, the third title from the Famicom 1985 game lineup with this tuxedoed bird as the protagonist. You must compete in a dodgeball-esque tournament against other adorable animal creatures.
The first person to get all the balls on the other side (or more than your opponent when the timer is up) wins a set. Best two out of three games wins the match. Mini-games like Whack-a-Mole add variety between rounds. Draws result in a replay with added bombs. This title would never make it to the NES, although it would be ported to the Gameboy in the US.
Penguin-kun Wars offers a great single-player experience, but the biggest value is in its local multiplayer experience. You can play an 8-player tournament with seven of your closest friends! It’s pretty incredible that the Famicom jumped from 2-player maximum multiplayer to 8-player without any intermediate steps. No other game on the system can accommodate so many players. It's a shame more people don't know about this one; Penguin-kun Wars should be considered an underrated classic.
I am considering a playthrough to be beating the Hi Score. I played on an original NES with a Game Genie adapter (see Shorts) to allow for playing a Famicom cartridge. I am using a NES Advantage controller, RCA cables, and a Sharp X-Flat 27" CRT TV.
