Released 2/8/1986, Son Son for Famicom is a port by Capcom of their on-rails shooter originally released in arcades in 1984. This title is loosely based on the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West which tells the story of the monk Xuanzang's travel to India to retrieve Indian Buddhist sutras to bring back to China. Commissioned by the Buddha himself, the monk encounters a Monkey King and various fantastical creatures including gods and demons on his quest. This religious dimension to the game, namely showing a Buddha statue, would have made it ineligible for Nintendo of America's nonreligious requirements. The character sprites, while beautiful and numerous, push the system beyond its limits and make the game very laggy. Still this is an early on-rails shooter that paved the way for games like Sin and Punishment on N64 (one of my favorite games) so it has some merit. The original arcade game is definitely worth checking out.

I am considering a playthrough to be beating the Hi Score. I played on an original NES with a Game Genie adapter (see Shorts) to allow for playing a Famicom cartridge. I am using a NES Advantage controller, RCA cables, and a Sharp X-Flat 27" CRT TV.
