Released 12/16/1985, Obake no Q Tarou: Wanwan Panic for Famicom is a "comic adventure" (according to the manual) action game developed by Bandai exclusively for the Famicom. Though based on an anime and manga series, this game would make it to the NES the following year as Chubby Cherub, altered and stripped of any reference to the original IP.

In the Famicom version you play as an obake, or shapeshifting ghost named Q-Taro, who must gather fruit and cakes to maintain energy to fly through each level. Barking dogs are your main foes, but special powerups allow you to hurl projectiles or become invincible/translucent. You meet your friend Sho-chan Ohara as each day proceeds (notice the changing sky), but you can also end up in Heaven or Hell!

Although Q-Taro was relatively unknown in the West at the time of this release, he did get exposure in the 1970's as a cartoon called Obake No Q-Taro, presumably dubbed in English. It's not clear which version this would have been, but the title suggests it was the original black and white anime from the 1960's. The release of the Famicom game coincided with an anime show developed for Asahi TV in 1985, the third and most familiar from Doraemon creator Fujiko Fujio.

This game has some charm and a good balance of difficulty, but overall it lacks depth. This is easily the weakest of Bandai's anime-based games for the Famicom. However, the Famicom version is undoubtedly better than the NES revamp due to the connection with the anime series. They really nail the look of Q-Taro.

I am considering a playthrough to be beating the Hi Score. I played on an original NES with a Game Genie adapter (see Shorts) to allow for playing a Famicom cartridge. I am using a NES original controller, RCA cables, and a Sharp X-Flat 27" CRT TV.
