Game: Phantasy Star II
Platform: Sega Genesis
Completed: August 29, 2021
Rules: Beat the game
Part: 7 of 7

Rolf, Kain, Rudo, and Amy spend some time building their levels before opening Pandora's box and having a very close encounter with failure. Will they succeed in destroying the Mother Brain, and is it even worth it to the people of the Algo solar system to do so? Will Rolf and party make it off of Noah alive? I'm not sure really. Here are some highlights and thoughts:

52 minutes, 30 seconds - It's kind of fun how the stars in space either scroll faster or stop scrolling depending on which direction your screen is scrolling vertically.

2 hours, 41 minutes, 45 seconds - Well this was a war of attrition with Dark Force. Kind of a funny battle. I wonder why they decided to have him award exactly 2,223 experience points and zero meseta. Odd choice.

And Mother Brain awards a grand total of one experience "points" and zero meseta. That's kind of funny, just like the "ROLFand" typo right after.

One thing I didn't show is that once the intro cutscene plays at the title screen after beating the game, I noticed that the water was flowing at the dams when it was scrolling around the overworld. I wonder when that happened. It doesn't do that initially.

Final thoughts:
Overall I really like this game but man does it have some flaws. I think a lot of those were touched on in the descriptions of the seven videos but one thing that I don't think I mentioned that haunts you through the entire game is the AI of your team. Often times they seem to purposely target the worst enemies strategically and spread out their attacks so none of their foes die. Their accuracy is dreadfully low, and it's especially frustrating to miss with expensive techniques. You can even miss when an enemy is paralyzed. Oh and don't try to run. You can't. The odds of successfully running in this game are abysmal. It isn't worth the attempt most of the time. The only time I would ever try to run is if the only other option was death, or if I accidentally selected the run option like I did a couple of times in this playthrough. Speaking of which, the menuing in this game is clunky and frustrating. Part of that is because of the blinking icon. Sometimes you hit a direction but you don't know if the game accepted your input because the red icon is blinking and is invisible when you hit the button. There is also a bit of lagginess to the menus so that really makes it difficult to navigate the menus quickly without error. I already mentioned the confusing shops, confusing equipment, and not being able to tell who can equip which items and which ones are better. You can't tell which items can be used in battle. There should be more items of Nei. Typos are all over. The Visiphone location is stupid and the fact that you can't save anywhere near the final area is too. Oh and if you use Shir, don't take her to any of the shops on Dezo. She can actually steal something and if she does, she vanishes from your party and is somehow all the way back in Rolf's house on Mota! This means you pretty much have to save before entering a shop on Dezo which is insane. If she goes to Mota, you have to go all the way back to get her and then traverse through Skure for the millionth time. Honestly though, I still love this game and an attempt at a "Rolf only" challenge interests me. Is that even possible?
