Phantasy Star II (Genesis) - Rolf Only (Part 5)
Game: Phantasy Star II
Platform: Sega Genesis
Completed: September 14, 2021
Rules: Beat the game using Rolf only. Except he's YOYO!
Part: 5 of 7
In part five YOYO finally learns Megid (after another 3 or so hours of grinding) and gets rid of Climatrol and Nei's tombstone. With the government ready to arrest him for disrupting the weather (or possibly stealing the VIsiphone), Rolf grabs the four keycards for the four dams and heads to each one in order to open the floodgates and prevent the planet from drowning. Eventually, the government catches up with him, he ends up in space, and an entire planet is destroyed. Wow.
Even though this is a YOYO only playthrough, Nei is required for the boss battle here. This is the reason I learned Rever beforehand. Sure I could revive her at the clone labs or try to steal a Moon Dew but what's the fun in that? YOYO needs the maximum amount of time by himself.
Here are some highlights:
30 minutes - Like I said in the description of part 4...One thing to watch out for is that the game only allows up to 65,535 experience points in a single battle. If you go over that number then the counter starts again at zero. This is why I end the battles before that happens. It would be a shame to fight a 30 minute long battle only to get like 7,181 experience because the counter looped. I don't think the meseta has a limitation like this oddly enough.
3 hours, 17 minutes, 30 seconds - Finally! Megid at level 35, in Climatrol, with YOYO only. I can finally move on with the game. Megid inflicts very high damage on all enemies but does heavy damage on all of your party members as well...except YOYO. That means that in a YOYO only playthrough you don't have to worry about Megid damaging your own people!
3 hours, 21 minutes - Wow. Neifirst must be blind. She missed a level 1 Nei twice in a row. Also Megid on Neifirst. Yeah. Waste a trimate in celebration. And when you win, make sure you quickly...decide...to stand there...in the explosion of the century! Notice that no explosions touch YOYO or the text box. Very good, Sega. Very good. As a reward I finally get to play the rest of the game without Nei's stupid tombstone lingering around in my menus.
3 hours, 26 minutes, 30 seconds - I had a bit of difficulty finding those control towers in Piata. Sorry about that.
3 hours, 33 minutes, 30 seconds - I had to demonstrate how if you use this keyboard it just boots you out of the control tower. How would you know that? And why is there a keyboard here anyways? So odd. Time to reload the wrong game right after like a stooge.
3 hours, 37 minutes, 30 seconds - I decided to store all of the dam cards except for the one I was going to be using in my next outing since that allowed me to carry more trimates in my inventory.
3 hours, 49 minutes, 15 seconds - I chose to go to the yellow dam first because I wanted to get the Amber Robe as quickly as possible. This item casts Gires in battle as many times as you decide to use it at no cost at all. This is a total game changer and becomes the primary method of healing.
3 hours, 51 minutes, 40 seconds - You know, I don't think this game lets you reorganize your items easily. Especially in a solo game. I guess I could shuffle things around at the baggage area but what a pain. All I wanted to do was put the Amber Robe at the top of my inventory so it would be quicker to use in battle.
3 hours, 59 minutes, 50 seconds - Notice how now that the enemies are robots you can get into battles inside of these tubes. That's kind of strange.
4 hours, 12 minutes, 20 seconds - This Storm Gear is also an amazing item that allows you to cast Gizan on ALL enemies for free at any time. This is really nice to have against physically resistant foes and is why I chose the blue dam as my second dam to visit. You actually get a Color Scarf right after that which casts Saner for free in battle as well. That will increase your agility and can make you go first in each round, but I don't think it will be necessary. I'll hold onto it just in case though. Might be handy for the final bosses or something. But then you get the Snow Crown right after that! This is a great item that casts Deban in battle which I think doubles your defense. This is probably going to be very useful, especially towards the end. What a great DAM! Raphael would approve.
4 hours, 29 minutes, 30 seconds - DAM! I screwed up here and went to the wrong dam. If it looks like I'm stalling on my way to the green dam it's because I was trying to figure the map out while I was on my way.
4 hours, 56 minutes, 30 seconds - Two Megid blasts and a Nazan to the dome for these Army Eyes. But...the future refused to change.
