Phantasy Star II (Genesis) - Rolf Only (Part 3)
Game: Phantasy Star II
Platform: Sega Genesis
Completed: September 14, 2021
Rules: Beat the game using Rolf only. Except he's YOYO!
Part: 3 of 7
In part three YOYO returns to gains some levels fighting Slugmess and finally obtains the jet scooter in Roron. He somehow manages to find the Maruera Leaf on Uzo island all by himself and uses it to infiltrate the underwater Climatrol. Here he finds the Blastoid, which come to find out is an amazing enemy for leveling up. Speaking of which, the game doesn't let you leave Nei at home so you have to drag her dead body around in a YOYO only playthrough. The game also requires Nei to be alive in order to fight the boss of Climatrol. To have her alive for as little time as possible, I gained levels in Climatrol for approximately 9,999 hours until he reached level 30 and learned Rever. This allows you to revive Nei right before the boss, who supports your YOYO only run and promptly kills her for good. Sadly, this means that like half of this video is grinding for experience.
Here are some highlights:
19 minutes, 50 seconds - Why is YOYO so far down on the screen? Why?
1 hours, 30 seconds - Sometimes the Slugmess does its multiplying thing but nothing happens. It's rare.
1 hour, 59 minutes, 40 seconds - When I picked up the Maruera Leaf, did it take the place of one of my Trimates? I wonder if it can overwrite something like your equipment or the Visiphone!
2 hours, 31 minutes - A fun typo here. The color of water around here certainly...what?
2 hours, 38 minutes, 45 seconds - The Slugmess can be harvested here for great amounts of experience and meseta, but the Blastoids are worth even more and are way less threatening. This is totally worth doing, especially since I will need to revive Nei at the end of this dungeon in order to progress the story. I could have stolen a Moon Dew, but I'm going the cool route and learning Rever at level 30 like a rad man deluxe. One thing to watch out for though is that the game only allows up to 65,535 experience points in a single battle. If you go over that number then the counter starts again at zero. This is why I end the battles before that happens. It would be a shame to fight a 30 minute long battle only to get like 7,181 experience because the counter looped. I don't think the meseta has a limitation like this oddly enough.
3 hours, 23 minutes, 30 seconds - This is the most I've ever gotten from a battle. 53,796 experience points and 37,700 meseta! Two level ups! Only a million hours of level grinding to go!
