Game: Phantasy Star II
Platform: Sega Genesis
Completed: August 29, 2021
Rules: Beat the game
Part: 6 of 7

Rolf, Kain, Rudo, and Amy fumble around with the awful shop and equipment mechanics before visiting an esper with a confusing name, depending on whether you played the Japanese or North American version of the first Phantasy Star. They reveal the hidden dungeons on Dezo and set out to recover the items of Nei which they use to invade the space station called Noah, which may have had its name mixed up with the esper's. Here are some highlights:

4 minutes - Again, I hate how cumbersome the equipment system is. You have to screw around trying to see who can equip what, and then in this case I bought a Laconigear for Rudo and it ended up being worse than the Laconiamet that he already had. Time to reset. If I remember correctly, the map that came with the game may have had the equipment list on the back with who can equip them though.

6 minutes - Whenever you reset or power off the game, the characters who were using items in battle are changed to "defend" instead of the game remembering that they were set to use their item. That tripped me up more than once.

10 minutes, 20 seconds - Out of the last five battles, four of them were this one. If you get bad luck like this then you just fail and have to try again.

16 minutes, 45 seconds - You can even open a chest from behind, regardless of the barrier in front of it.

17 minutes, 10 seconds - Here's a great example of more vertical barriers you can walk through.

20 minutes, 25 seconds - Which town has a department store that sells a Magic Cap?

54 minutes, 15 seconds - I had to try this...regardless of who you have leading the party, you still get referred to as Rolf. Too bad.

1 hour, 10 minutes, 40 seconds - This battle ends in a wonderful way. I wasn't sure if Nasak worked on dead people or not. Here's my answer.

3 hours, 37 minutes - I got into a battle on a pitfall here, kind of like how I got into a battle while standing on a chute before. I guess we're all fighting while hovering in the air. Cool.

4 hours, 43 minutes - Why is it that Amy can equip "emel" type shields but for some reason cannot equip the Neiemel? That's odd. She's already a tank though which is funny, even when not defending. I wonder how much of that is because of her two laconian emels and how much is because she just so happened to gain above average defense boosts throughout the game. And why are there only eight items of Nei anyways? There are plenty of characters with plenty of equipment slots that can never get filled up with any Nei items. Some of the best equipment for some people is just stuff bought from the shops. Or like how there's a Nei emel, but only one. It seems so random. There's one Nei helmet, no Nei knife or dagger, no Nei shoes or boots, and only one Nei slasher. Actually, why "Nei" anyways? Were those items on Dezo called items of Nei before she died? What significance does she have to the people of Dezo or to Lutz or whoever put those items there?

5 hours, 11 minutes - Interesting. All of a sudden I find a battle on Dezo with robot enemies from Mota.

5 hours, 19 minutes, 10 seconds - This is a consistent glitch where the music messes up when you speak with Lutz after obtaining all eight items of Nei. I don't remember the text getting all busted up though. That's fun. By the way, the fact that the Visiphone is so well hidden and has no clues about obtaining it is pretty dumb. If you never picked it up (which you most likely wouldn't if you didn't have the hint book) then the closest place to Noah that you could save would be the town of Aukba. You would have to go all the way through the Crevice again every time. That's absurd. They should have made the Visiphone easier to obtain or at least had a place to save in Esper Mansion. It kind of reminds me of that game Little Ninja Brothers for the NES and how it didn't have a place to save in the final town or final area so if you died or just wanted to save your level gains then you'd have to go all the way back through a long cave to a previous town.
