스타 글라디에이터

캡콤 최초의 3D 대전액션 게임으로 2편의 경우 북미에서는 플라즈마 소드(Plasma Sword)라고도 불린다.

1996년 6월 아케이드로 발매. 발매한지 4개월만인 1996년 10월 25일 플레이스테이션으로 이식되었다. 후속작인 2는 1998년 3월 발매. 아케이드로 발매한 후 무려 1년 9개월뒤인 1999년 12월 드림캐스트로 이식되었다. 초대 작품의 캐릭터 관련 디자인은 캇파와 공룡을 제외하고 전부 야스다 아키라 프로듀서 이츠노 히데아키 사사키 에이이치로우.

미래를 배경으로 광선검이라든가 이런저런 SF적인 무기를 들고 빌슈타인의 음모를 막기 위해 싸운다...라는 일단은 좀 평범하지만 무난한 스토리이다. 그런데 인간의 제 6감을 물리화 시키는 플라즈마 에너지로 만든 검날들.. 이라는 설정이 있다. 막상 게임을 해보면 애당초 인간의 정신력과 플라즈마는 아무런 연관이 없다.

캡콤 최초의 3D 대전게임이자 발매된 지 20년이 넘은 것 치곤 자료가 많지 않다. 발매된 1996년은 대전 액션 게임 시장이 과포화 상태에 이르러서 극심한 침체기에 들어선 해였으므로 이 게임도 마찬가지로 흥행에는 실패했다. 또한, 1편의 경우에는 줄거리를 포함해서 모든 것이 미완성된 게임이다. 이 때문인지는 몰라도 야스다 아키라는 1편에 대해 '불우 불빈한 기억 밖에 없으며 나 포함 스태프 전원 트라우마 일 것' 이라고 발언했다.

후속작인 스타 글라디에이터 2의 해외판 제목은 'Plasma Sword'로 1과는 완전히 다른 평범한 3D 대전 액션 게임이 되었으며, 스타 글라디에이터는 2에서 완결된다. 2만의 특징이라면 숨겨진 캐릭터인 카에데, 뇌원(라이온)을 제외한 상하의 캐릭터가 초필살기를 제외한 나머지(기본기, 잡기, 필살기 등)는 죄다 동일하고 초필살기인 플라즈마 스트라이크만 다르다는 점이다.

어째서 초필살기만 다른지는 불명이지만 이것만으로 개성을 살렸다는 평이 있다.

또한 2편의 경우 진 엔딩을 보기 위해서는 8스테이지까지 왔을 때 시간과 관계없이 1라운드제 7만, 3라운드제 9만 5천, 5라운드제에서 11만 이상의 점수를 획득해야 한다.

시리즈의 정확한 명칭은 스타 글라디에이터 EPISODE 1: FINAL CRUSADE. 전체적인 분위기부터 캐릭터 구성까지 까놓고 말해서 스타워즈를 대놓고 복제해 놀고 있기 때문에 제목도 이런 뉘앙스로 지은 건데, 정작 2탄에 가서는 그냥 스타 글라디에이터 2가 되어버렸다. 부제는 Nightmare of Bilstein. 어찌되었던 원 소스인 스타워즈를 가지고 놀고 있다는 것은 사실.


특징

1편의 기본적으로는 당시 발매된 게임인 소울 엣지를 다량 벤치마크하여 기본 조작계에 많은 유사성을 보이나, 실질적으로는 버튼 조합의 기본기 콤보에서 필살기로 연결한다는 2D 게임다운 게임성을 어느정도 유지하고 있다. 2편의 경우 마치 당시 한창 발매되던 KOF를 3D로 리메이크 한 걸로 느껴질 정도로 2D 게임의 요소를 강화시켰다. 그 만큼 커맨드 입력에 의한 필살기가 2편에서는 전편에 비해 강해졌다.

또한 기본기 버튼을 조합해서 나가는 '플라즈마 콤보'라는 루트 콤보가 있는데, 개시 기본기에 따라서 A, B, K의 3종류로 나눈다. 각 캐릭터는 이 3가지 속성중 하나를 지니고 있으며, 각 캐릭터마다 정해진 최종루트에 도달하여 특수 커맨드를 입력하면 고유의 피니셔인 '플라즈마 피니쉬'가 발동한다. 2탄에서는 이 피니쉬가 삭제된다. 대신 2D에서 자주 볼 수 있는 기게이지가 추가되면서 초필살기인 플라즈마 스트라이크와 플라즈마 필드가 추가되었다. 플라즈마 스트라이크는 여타 격투게임에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 초필살기이지만 플라즈마 필드는 시동기가 걸렸을 시 특수한 스테이지가 만들어지며 각 캐릭터마다 유리한 효과를 내는 공격을 할 수 있게된다.


Plasma Sword: Nightmare of Bilstein

Plasma Sword: Nightmare of Bilstein, also known as just Plasma Sword, and released in Japan as Star Gladiator 2: Nightmare of Bilstein (Japanese: スターグラディエイター2 ナイトメア オブ ビルシュタイン, Hepburn: Sutāguradieitā Tsū Naitomea obu Birushutain), is a 1998 3D weapon-based fighting video game released by Capcom for the arcades. It is the sequel to Star Gladiator and runs on the ZN-2 hardware, an improved version of the PlayStation-based ZN-1 hardware its predecessor ran on. A Dreamcast port was released in 2000.


Story​

In the epic battle of the Final Crusade that had occurred from within last year, Hayato Kanzaki had slayed the evil Dr. Edward Bilstein and brought the end of the Fourth Empire's terror and destruction throughout the entire universe. The fall of the Fourth Empire and the death of its leader were momentous occasions of last year and that it had signaled the restoration of peace and happiness, but all is not well from within the universe.

Rumors have been circulating about the unexpected return of Bilstein in a new cybernetic body, as well as the appearance of a ghost who eerily looks like Bilstein's old cybernetic body. At the same time, the Fourth Empire has taken the opportunity in rebuilding its strong forces and that the loyal members of the organization are quite determined to carry out Bilstein's evil will of eliminating those who stand in the way of their emperor's universal conquest.

Hayato, June, Saturn, and Gamof soon realize that the malevolent threat of Bilstein is far from over and that the four of them must head back into the relentless fight in order to defeat Bilstein and the Fourth Empire once and for all. However, the quartet is not alone from within their second battle as they have new friends to assist them from within the inevitable conflict, such as their former enemy turned ally Zelkin, an extremely strong Japanese military war soldier named Gantetsu, a noble and aspiring young American modern-day superhero with a bird motif named Eagle, and a mysterious yet cheerful young Japanese rhythmic gymnast named Ele. Hayato and his friends will find themselves heading back into the hard ordeal as Star Gladiators, Fourth Empire members, and neutral parties will be thrust into a war that will determine the fate of not only the Earth, but the entire universe.

Gameplay

The control system from the first Star Gladiator was reworked and rebuilt for the sequel. Much like the first game, players are given an arsenal of four usable buttons. Two of the buttons are attacks for a fighter's weapon while one button is used for a kick attack and the final button is used for inward and outward sidesteps as well as dashes.

The Plasma Combo System was discarded in favor of the Plasma Strike System, in which all characters have a Plasma Gauge (similar to the ones found in Street Fighter and Darkstalkers) and that they can store up to three levels of the Plasma Gauge, enabling them to pull off super moves called Plasma Strikes.
