We face the fourth gym in our challenge at a level disadvantage. With Great Marsh access, providing that the player has enough patience, it is actually possible to fish out a lv. 30 Gyarados with the Good Rod. The catch rate mechanics this game borrowed from SwSh make catching anything higher-levelled than the Pokemon currently out troublesome, and when you consider Gyarados' already low catch rate, getting a higher-levelled one is quite a nuisance. I was able to get one at lv. 26, which equals the maximum level in the wild in the marsh, and it already knew Waterfall, which should serve it well for the battles to come.

Wake leads with his own Gyarados, and one thing the past challenges taught me is that one of the best ways to counter an enemy Gyarados is with a Gyarados of your own. Intimidate and the water-resistant typing are excellent for defence, and the readily available Thunderbolt TM lets us strike a double weakness despite having low special attack with an Adamant nature. Holding a Metronome, I am able to 2HKO seemingly reliably.

Quagsire is switching in next, with electric immunity warranting a new counter. There are low-level wild Roselias you can catch, so I use a stone I got from the Underground (not my favourite area to farm to say the least; you can say I've given up on continuing) to have a Roserade early. The move relearner makes one really powerful at this stage of the game, with Giga Drain and Petal Dance being among the moves it can learn (to be fair, the Veilstone Department Store options for many other types are no less powerful in comparison).

The only Pokemon left for us to deal with is the signature Floatzel. It may seem like it would shut down Golem completely, but Sturdy is a sufficient measure to survive either Brine or Aqua Jet, and the boost from Liechi Berry, guaranteed to activate at 1 HP, makes Self-Destruct as powerful as a super-effective Earthquake would be. With electric-types being inaccessible and grass-types afraid to switch into Ice Fang, this is indeed the best way to handle Wake's prized Pokemon.
