So the fights against this guy have been pretty hard, harder than some of the gyms for sure, but I didn't upload most of them because he uses the same Pokemon. This one's (the battle @ Distortion World) is the toughest of them all obviously, and a grand rehearsal for Cynthia you could say.
Houndoom is the lead and it makes sense that our bulky water (kind of an exaggeration of what Lumineon is capable of, you'll agree) takes up this task. Since I didn't have the Choice Specs on him this time, I used Rain Dance to receive a boost to both speed and Surf's power (making it exactly as powerful as a Specs-boosted version), so that was one way to go around the loss of Specs in this mostly favourable matchup. Didn't expect Houndoom to take the boosted SE hit, but what can I say, Lumineon sucks.
Gyarados will be lured in next, and this is why Choice Specs is on Pachirisu - I deleted Discharge (those para procs help out whenever I'm not fighting a double battle) and made space for Thunderbolt. Even still, I seem to require a high roll to not miss the OHKO in spite of Gyarados's 4x weakness and Pachirisu's Specs+STAB. That's what it means to be playing a masochist run after GSC my friends (RBY and GSC are notorious for horrible movesets on the key opponents, which some of you have seen me expose and exploit in the GSC masochist run I finished some time back).
Weavile will come out, and this dude is actually really tough to deal with. Kricketune got the Brick Break TM (chose him over Sudowoodo who also kinda wanted it) and OHKOs with it easily due to Weavile's low defence+4x weakness; however, the combination of Fake Out and STAB Ice Punch will always KO Kricketune, making the Brick Break kill impossible. Sudowoodo is sent in for this reason, with much better bulk to take an Ice Punch of two. Sudowoodo is not very healthy as a result - too bad as his matchups against the remaining mons are very good (seriously, the rocks and rock-grounds aren't that bad in-game in gen 4, quit your sandbagging, people).
Honchcrow will come out. I was hoping to KO with Pachirisu's Thunderbolt and the mouse happened to be at full HP as well, but a stray Night Slash crit put an end to those plans. Sudowoodo had to be switched in to get in a Rock Slide during the turn I predicted to be wasted for healing, and Sucker Punch helped me finish the dark bird off. Both parties missing the KO just barely was amusing, I suppose.
Crobat came in when most of my team was damaged pretty badly and I didn't feel like cheesing out with healing items on Sudowoodo and Pachirisu, so I wanted to see how Altaria would do - it even had a Persim Berry in case of Confuse Ray, but Toxic was used instead.
The matchup wasn't entirely in Altaria's favour, even with access to Dragon Dance, but a Fly crit let me take Crobat out with a Flamethrower attack next turn. Pretty fair considering Honchkrow's crit on Cyrus's side.
Well, what can I say, only one gym left so we're getting closer to finishing this interesting challenge. Can't say I've been tempted to use many of these Pokemon before, so it's been a nice experience.
