This week, I will be trading Shinx through Surprise Trade, I usually breed for 31 IVs in at least 4 or 5 stats, and I went with Adamant for the Nature as this Pokémon has a higher Attack stat than Special Attack.
I do have Guts on some of them, Shinx can even work with Intimidate when going through the game, while Guts does give it the extra power when inflicted with a status condition, its other Ability is Rivalry, but I find it to be situational as the Ability increases Shinx's power if it is up against a Pokémon of the same gender, if it is against a Pokémon of the opposite gender, its power decreases by 50%.
For Egg Moves, I went with Double Kick, Night Slash, Baby-Doll Eyes, and Quick Attack, as I find those moves to stand out the most out of the ones it can learn, its other moves are Take Down, Howl, and Shock Wave. For Pokémon that can learn those moves, it gets Double Kick from Deerling, Mudbray, and Scorbunny, Quick Attack from many Pokémon, like Pikachu, Eevee, Buizel, or Pawmi, it can get Night Slash from Stunky, Weavile, and Zoroark, and Baby-Doll Eyes from Eevee, Teddiursa, and Fidough. While it does have Shock Wave as an Egg Move to give it a decent Electric-type move for early on, it can learn it from Rotom and Toxtricity through a Mirror Herb.
Next is level up moves, Shinx has Tackle and Leer for starting moves, and it can learn Thunder Shock, Charge, Bite, Spark, Roar, Volt Switch, Scary Face, Thunder Wave, Crunch, Discharge, Swagger, and Wild Charge. While it evolves into Luxio at Level 15, Shinx learns Spark at Level 16, it can hold off evolution for one level, Luxio learns the move at Level 18. Its final evolution Luxray learns Electric Terrain, and it isn't until Level 80 that it learns Wild Charge, Luxio learns Wild Charge at Level 68, and Shinx learns it at Level 48, making it best to hold off Shinx's evolution till then, Luxray does get Wild Charge earlier as a level up move in Pokémon Legends: Arceus.
Next are TMs, and I will go over what Luxray can learn, it can get Fake Tears, Fire Fang, Thunder Fang, Ice Fang, Agility, Confuse Ray, Thief, Trailblaze, Charge Beam, Snarl, Volt Switch, Psychic Fangs, Body Slam, Electro Ball, Light Screen, Eerie Impulse, Thunderbolt, Play Rough, Giga Impact, Hyper Beam, Thunder, and Tera Blast.
Luxray did not have a good start, in Gen 4, its physical movepool is very limited, Spark was its best Electric-type move, while it did learn Thunder Fang, that move had the same base power, but less accuracy than Spark, and all it had were Ice Fang, Fire Fang, and Crunch. It did gain Superpower in Platinum, and in Generation 5, it got Wild Charge for a better Electric-type move, and recently, it gained new moves like Play Rough, Psychic Fangs, and Trailblaze.
Luxray faces competition in online battles, while Guts is a nice Ability, and with Facade and a Normal Tera Type, it can deal some massive damage, Wild Charge is its main Electric-type move, it can use Trailblaze to fix its below average Speed stat, and a coverage move of choice, like Crunch, Psychic Fangs, or Play Rough. For Tera Type choice, Normal with Facade works well with Guts, it can go with Flying for a defensive Tera Type, it can go with Ice or Water to give it coverage against Ground-type Pokémon with Tera Blast.
In Double Battles, Luxray can make use of Intimidate, but it is overshadowed by Arcanine and Landorus Therian Forme, and with Incineroar coming back soon, Luxray is not an easy Pokémon to include to a Double Battle team. It is outclassed by Pawmot and Iron Hands as an Electric-type, and while Landorus is the top Intimidate user, Gyarados, Arcanine, and Salamence are better Intimidate users.
Luxray does face some problems in the main game, Spark will be its main Electric-type move for the whole game because of how late it gets Wild Charge unless you want to use a TM to teach it the move. Night Slash and Double Kick do give it some good moves to help in the early game, and I do recommend keeping Shinx from evolving for one level to get Spark earlier, as Luxio doesn't get it till Level 18. It does get some good coverage with Ice Fang, Trailblaze, Psychic Fangs, Play Rough, and a few other moves, making it a solid Electric-type Pokémon. For Tera Raid Battles, Luxray is more of a budget option, because with Iron Hands being one of the most popular Pokémon to use in Tera Raid Battles, Luxray does have some advantages with Intimidate, the downside is that Wild Charge is more of a self KO move, as Luxray will more likely go down more often with that move.
