So it seems I didn’t sign up in time for the Global Challenge 2024 I. It seems we had a change of the way signups are scheduled this generation for Online Competitions compared to the last one, where you could continue to sign up all the way until just before the end of the event, which is how the “Prologue” series were done (Paldea Prologue, Kitakami Prologue, and Blueberry Prologue). I had assumed that the Global Challenge 2024 I event would have the same signup schedule, but it seems signups have to be done in advance for this one. I’m not really sure why, but I’ll have to watch out for that in the future.

So instead, these are just regular battles, which I did after Global Challenge 2024 I had ended. It’s not a big deal to me, since the reward is 100,000 League Points. (Maybe Penny is involved in the Online Competition crew.) There was nothing I could do about this anyway, so there’s no point in crying over spilled milk.

I would’ve still liked it if you could keep signing up after the competition began though. I heard Palworld has competitions like these planned too, so Pocketpair, please schedule your signups so they overlap with the event itself!

Type: Double Battle
Opponent: Fred
Battle Court: Medali (Fortune Eatery)
Music: Carmine
My Pokémon: Lena (Mightyena), Gigi (Farigiraf), Gustave (Feraligatr), Hipparchus (Hippowdon)
Opponent's Pokémon: Ninetales (Kantonian), Typhlosion (Hisuian), Maushold, Minior

Looking at the lineup, there were two Pokémon I thought would turn up at the beginning, though likely one or the other and not both: Ninetales and Maushold. Ninetales would be there to set up harsh sunlight thanks to Drought, while Maushold is a popular opener for double battles (not as popular as the beginning of the generation, but there is still appeal in them) for having Friend Guard, an Ability that reduces damage to teammates, along with Fake Out and Follow Me. I had predicted Maushold for setup, then Ninetales accompanying a pinch hitter. It turned out to be the other way around, with Ninetales at the beginning to allow Typhlosion to do big damage early on using Eruption, then Maushold to help Minior set up.

This left me on the back foot, with Typhlosion augmenting Eruption through Terastallization to Fire, leaving both Lena (Mightyena) and Gigi (Farigiraf) fainting before they could even attack! It was up to my two remaining Pokémon to do this all on their own. I didn’t think I could make it through, though I was hoping to put a big enough dent in the opposing Pokémon by fighting back. Considering I knew all four of Fred’s selected Pokémon, you can bet having Gustave (Feraligatr) and Hipparchus (Hippowdon) made things more complicated.

Minior is my favorite Pokémon from Generation VII. It’s also one of my favorite Pokémon in general, certainly my favorite Rock-type and my favorite Flying-type. It’s a Pokémon found mainly in the upper atmosphere but can be found near the surface when they gather too much outer shell and become too heavy to remain that far up. Minior begins battle by quickly accumulating a new rocky crust via its signature Ability, Shields Down, and has a more defensive stat spread. If Minior gets to half HP or below without fainting, that rocky shell cracks, revealing a colorful, happy, konpeito-looking core within. This form is instead a glass cannon, even more so than usual because of the low HP requirement—if Minior’s HP goes back above half, the outer shell will re-form, and Minior goes back to the more wall-like stats. Minior comes in the seven colors of the rainbow, plus the black variant you see here, which is its shiny coloration. I have all seven colors, but I’m still looking for the shiny one. (The one my opponent used is one I doubt was obtained legitimately. I don't accept any shiny Pokémon from other people due to the chance that it may have been created illegitimately.)

I think this is the very first time I’ve chosen Hippowdon to Terastallize, and I can confirm Hippowdon is also the first Pokémon I’ve used for online battling to Terastallize to this type. Though I haven’t shown them all yet, I can also say that as of this team, I’ve had at least one Pokémon for all 19 Tera types, though some of them have since been changed to something else.
