I’m now at the point in this generation in which I have enough teams that I can start a session with one team and end with another. So, as promised, the back pair of this set of battle videos will feature the Wugtrio Team, consisting of this video and Friday’s video! Not sure if you prefer one team over the other, but I wanted to make sure they all get recent use, especially into Regulation F territory, because I also need to assess how effective they are with more Pokémon being available. Dangerous stuff like the new Paradox Pokémon, or Archaludon, as well as returning Pokémon like Whimsicott and Incineroar (or, in the case of single battles, the likes of Porygon2 and the Eon Duo).

Type: Double Battle
Opponent: Chris
Battle Court: Cabo Poco
Music: Terapagos 2
My Pokémon: Pepper (Scovillain), Dupré (Medicham), Winton (Avalugg) (Hisuian), Roland (Electrode) (Kantonian)
Opponent's Pokémon: Charjabug, Sylveon, Glimmora, Sinistcha

Yes, your eyes don’t deceive you—that is Charjabug, a not-fully-evolved Pokémon, the middle stage of an evolution line, coming after Grubbin but before Vikavolt. This is no ordinary not-fully-evolved Pokémon though, because it has a unique Ability: Battery, which increases the damage done by its allies’ special attacks by about 30%. With a Defense of 95 and Sp. Defense of 75, it can really last with an Eviolite. And with a special-oriented team, like what my opponent was using, that Charjabug was a real pain in the rear.

It was also difficult to figure out when that Charjabug would use Protect successfully and when he wouldn’t. My opponent would even have Charjabug use Protect on consecutive turns, though that risk didn’t pay off.

I must admit I got lucky with this battle. Won’t say if it’s a win or a loss, but it could’ve gone badly south if Moody decided to boost or debuff the wrong stats. Granted, Moody choosing Sp. Defense as the stat to drop twice is a row WAS basically putting a target marker on Pepper’s (Scovillain’s) heads against an all-special team augmented with Battery.

Despite Sinistcha being a pretty popular Pokémon in Ranked double battles, I think this is the first time I’ve shown the Pokémon’s signature Ability, Hospitality, at work: when Sinistcha (or Poltchageist, if someone is crazy enough to bring one in to a double battle…or they’re still training it) enters a double battle, the other Pokémon, if there is any, gets its HP restored by 25% of the maximum. It’s a pretty minor boost, but one that can swing the tide of battle if that other Pokémon really needs it. Sinistcha is also dangerous due to having moves like Matcha Gotcha, a spread move that heals the user; and the ever-popular, always-annoying Rage Powder.

Like with Polteageist, rarely, a Sinistcha will have a distinguishing mark on the bottom, separating the common Unremarkable Form Sinistcha from the sought-after Masterpiece Form. I couldn’t tell if this is Unremarkable or Masterpiece, but if it’s the latter, I’m pretty much convinced my opponent’s team was created or modified illegitimately. Charjabug, Sylveon, and Glimmora all have rare titles (“Recluse,” “Easily Flustered,” and “Reluctant”) on top of being shiny, and Sinistcha has the title “Great” which is gained only by having the maximum possible size Pokémon. A shiny Sinistcha I can believe, but one that also comes from a rare Poké Ball AND happens to be as large as the game allows? I don’t believe it for a second. (On top of Sylveon coming out of a Lure Ball, Charjabug coming out of a Sport Ball, Glimmora coming out of a Beast Ball, and Sinitcha coming out of a Friend Ball. REALLY stretching suspension of disbelief, Chris…) A step forward for using an unconventional, interesting strategy, but two steps back for going all-out in implausibility.
